I just switched the audio connection between my DVR and my receiver from analog RCA to TOSLINK.

Now the volume is acting all kinds of crazy. I will be watching tv and the show I am watching will be super quiet, then a tv ad will be super loud, then the next ad back to super quiet.

Anyone know what's up? And how to fix it?

    I have a Motorola DCT6208 for DVR, and a Pioneer VSX-815-K receiver.

You have a DVR. Fast forward through the commercial. That's the only thing you can do without using your receiver's dynamic compression if it has it.

I set the mute function on my rcvr to drop the audio by 20dB, and just hit that button when the commercials start. I was completely cutting off the audio, but then I had to actually watch the dad burn commercials so I would know when the show starts again. Now the commercials are relatively quiet, we can chat, or head off to the fridge for supplies and not miss the resumption of the show.

It may be listed as "night mode" or some similar name.
