Well I think i have finally narrowed the field to these three possibilities...

    Toshiba 65hx81

    Pioneer sd-643hds

    Mitsubishi 65819

Please comment about these sets and any others in the 3500.00 price range..

I have heard good and bad things about each of these units...I would like some opinions from other owners and people in the know...

    Thanks

Hands down, the Pioneer is the better set. I don't know what problems you have heard about, but I assure you that whatever inherent "problems" that the Pioneer has, they are negligible compared to the other sets you mention.
I was going throught the same quandry about which to purchase.
Toshiba: Poorer build quality, and warranty issues.
    Ghosting and ringing
    Vertical banding issues
Upconverts to 540p (they do this because it was
easier....it is the same timing as 1080i (half)
Marginal stretch modes and line doubling
    Mitsubishi: BAD Red Push
    Terrible line doubler...
Lousy stretch modes for regular broadcast TV
Pioneer: Best Line doubler in a RPTV
    No Ghosting/Ringing/vertical banding
Best Stretch modes in a RPTV
Best picture out of the box
    Best build quality/great warranty department
    This is purely my opinion.
I would suggest checking out www.hometheaterspot.com and looking under the specific manufacturer fot detailed information.
Remember, everyone compares all sets to the Pioneer Elite. It is the standard by which all RPTVs are judged. I don't think anyone will tell you there is a better picture in any set. The SD series from Pioneer are VIRTUALLY (that's the key word here) the same set. The differences are VERY minor in regards to the working parts.

Yes, I know. That is why I said the the differences are very minor. Most people will agree that the picture on the non-Elite is very comparable to the Elite.
