I'll wait for an informed opinion about the quality, but if that opinion is positive, I'm buying!

yeah, I can never understand people that preorder since more than often there are problems of low quality products, or errors with replacement discs etc.
I never pre-order anything.
I wait mostly for screenshots and trust my own eyes.
(i'm not refering to anyone specific but reviews aren't always impartial. There's much money at stake and blurays have to sell)

Let's just say I'm cautiously optimistic... (but I'm going to wait on reviews for this one, too) ;)

I know there will be a price drop and also wait for reviews since , no disrespect, but VCI blurays have been met with a lot of negativity
Their bluray of A Christmas Carol was authored that it was full of motion issues judder on my player. It was pretty bad and sad :(

With how terrible every other home video version of this title looks, this should look better by default.

This is a PD title and was released all over the place on VHS from various companies and by a few on DVD. I am in hopes this will give us the best possible quality allowable within VCI's budget. I laugh out loud at a number of moments in this film, even when viewing it alone, and that says a lot for me.

Actually, I think it was only the third film, "Topper Returns" (1941) that is PD, and used to show up everywhere, being released by every PD-oriented outfit existing, going back to early-1980s VHS days. The first two films should still be copyrighted. I'll look forward to this release, as the film goes way back with me, and maintains a lot of nostalgic value. The official dvd release (Artisan?) wasn't too hot, quality-wise.

Whether or not the film is actually PD, it's been treated as such by various entities, so the effect is pretty much the same at this point - there are no high quality copies of this movie available commercially. Hopefully, this release will change that. UCLA did a film restoration years ago, and there's an SD transfer of that restoration that gets shown on TCM and looks better than the existing discs. If VCI is able to get a newer HD scan made of that restored element, I would be satisfied with that.

There was also a DVD collection with all three Topper films that got cancelled a month or so back.

It makes me wonder if they lost, or never truly had, rights to the releases.

They did the same thing with One Million BC (another Roach film put out by VCI). It was up for a day or two, then got cancelled. It came back a month or two later. I just got it in the mail and it's fantastic.

Me, too... it looks and sounds quite nice, has a commentary track by Toby Roan, and a photo gallery (no trailer, though). Besides the three-film Topper collection, VCI/Sprocket Vault also listed another three-film DVD collection of Hal Roach titles, Turnabout/Road Show/The Housekeeper's Daughter, which also got cancelled (or, at least, has a listing of "Currently Unavailable"), but the same thing happened with One Million BC, so I continue to watch and wait.

I remember the films well. I remember the books even better ... many many years ago, aged around 12, I read as many novels by Thorne Smith as I could .. the 'Topper' books of course, and even better, 'The Night Life of the Gods'. These would be pretty mild today, but back then, the sex, partying, hard-drinking and everything else seemed pretty titillating!
The books taught me, for one thing, that Americans were obsessed with spirits (the ubiquitous Martini of course). The pages were doused with the stuff. I prefer wine....
