Christopher McQuarrie has been brought in to do rewrites on the script:

    https://www.slashfilm.com/top-gun-2-script-rewrites-christopher-mcquarrie/

We know McQuarrie works well with Cruise and knows how to write to his strengths. However, considering that this has been in production since June and was until very recently aiming for a release next July, this feels a little weird. If anybody is going to be able to step in and fix the script in the middle of production, it's probably McQuarrie, but it seems potentially problematic that he has to do so. Hopefully he gets it where it needs to be.

What death wish stunts will Cruise perform in this one--and will he survive them?

He'll have to jump from one jet to another at super sonic speeds!

He'll perform daring stunts in a space-age flying machine while on his way to fix unmanned drones that the military is using instead of fighter jets. During these missions he will encounter enemies trying to down the drones which are being used to combat the hostile enemies.

Oh wait. That was Oblivion. That was an entirely different film directed by an entirely different....er....the same....director.

Oh my! I'm going to need a new receiver with Atmos and a LOT more speakers and subwoofers for when this movie hits 4K Blu-ray.

    I loved that trailer.

Was hoping for a reason to care - a hint at an interesting story maybe.

The movie is almost a year away. I think the point of this trailer was just to say, "Get excited" and announce its arrival for those who might not know about it. A future trailer can lay out the story more. I'm not worried; this looks cool, and for now, that's enough.

Well, to be fair, the original Top Gun didn't exactly have that either. ;)

I think we know the big stunt now, Cruise pilots his own jet.

Is Ed Harris is playing the son of James Tolkan's character from the original?

Would the US military allow Tom Cruise to fly a taxpayer's F-14 fighter jet? Still, if the production company underwrites it, then I guess with Cruise anything is possible.

Cruise is a pilot, but I am fairly convinced that the marvels of CG are putting him into the pilots seat of an expensive military jet aircraft. It honestly doesn't make any sense at all to do it any other way. I think I saw something online where its said that he flies some kind of aircraft in this new movie, but not a jet.

I'll reserve judgment until we know more about the movie, but I think Top Gun's brand of jingoistic machismo is the last thing we need right now. The first film was notorious for having recruiting tables set up in movie theaters. Nothing against the military (my father was Air Force) but that kind of thing crosses the line into propaganda.

And at 34 years since the original, this might be the longest time between a film and a direct sequel with the original star.

Yes I’ve never seen the first film either. Maybe I’m wrong, but I thought the film was little more than a Cruise vehicle, and, not to trample on Scott’s grave, I like only a few of his films. Seems to me one common denominator of all his films is his visual style- too many one-shots, close ups, with no sense of environment or surroundings. I thought he was a less than stellar director.
