    Howdy from Texas,
I was wondering what 5 dvd's your HT couldn't live without. I mean your HT would not even function properly if they were left out of the equation. If this thread has been done before I apologize in advance, I am a newbie here.

    Thanks
    Hank Edwards

Your home theater needs to show off the best of DVD's not only in terms of video and audio quality, but also the quality of the films. Sure, The Haunting looks and sounds great...but it's a stinker of a movie. [IMG]

    With 5.1 and 16x9, etc:

Who Framed Roger Rabbit: Vista Series
    Superman: The Movie
    North By Northwest

Other (perhaps not widescreen and 5.1, but a HT should also be there to show off mono, B&W, and 1.33:1)

    The Thin Man
Singin' In The Rain: Special Edition
    8 1/2: Criterion Collection

Of course, the other posts have great suggestions...but do you really need another person suggesting a given "A+" like The Fellowship of the Ring? [IMG]

I'm gonna come at this from a different approach. Your collection should be well rounded.

    1) The Wizard of Oz - For Video - The one DVD that sold me on the quality of DVD. I felt like I was watching it for the first time again.
    2) The Matrix - For Audio - Made me get my first 5.1 Surround System, and upgrade. [IMG]
    3) Mallrats - Commentary - Innovative and Hilarious. The Movie's not the greatest, but it grows on you once you find out how much fun they had making it.
    4) Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Season 3) - Best TV Season on DVD. I'm partial to this set and Stargate though.
    5) Utlimate Toybox - Best Everything - But I have to give it the Kudos for the extras. This is just one awesome set.

In no order, I would say:

    - Saving Private Ryan: DTS Edition

    - Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition

    - Band of Brothers

    - Resident Evil Superbit (I bet nobody else says that one!)

    - Seven Samurai: Criterion (if you don't have the best film of all time in you colleciton, your HT isn't worth owning)

    The Fifth Element

No need for five, That movie alone will do it! Stunning Picture and Audio! but if there must be five I would say get 4 more copies of that as backups.
