That's a pretty subjective question. If "quality" means a reliable product, then my Aiwa mini system I had when I was a kid played pretty much non stop for years. Never had a problem with it.
The question is far to vague. Top 3 in terms of WHAT? Sound? Features? What price range? I would have a list under $1K and obviously a very different one at under $5K.
It is my humble opinion that few (if any) receivers made today compare favorably with the behemoth receivers from 25 years ago. I honestly don't understand how engineers can un-learn things.
But the same is true of audio recordings. I have a few that are over 40 years old, and that sense of "wow" is more present than anything put out today (to include SACD/DVD-A).
John Garcia, you are right. Maybe I should limit it to top receiver brands under $500. Thanks for the clarification.
Kevin, you made a very interesting point. My aim really was to be able to focus on the brands because i'm shopping for a receiver right now. I'm overwhelmed by the number of brands out there and i would like to focus on just 3. thanks.
