FILMS

1. LOTR:EE TRILOGY
Sure I could knock it down but I'd rather just list what I believe to be the best.
2. 8 1/2
Fantastic film, amazingly silky b&w transfer plus interesting extras
3. FASSBINDER'S BRD TRILOGY
Three terrific films, not a dog in sight. Beautifully presented.
4. JEAN COCTEAU'S ORPHIC TRILOGY
O.K. I really like the guy's films.
5. THE RULES OF THE GAME
Great and important film, terrific release.
6. BRASIL
Only flaws are non-anamorphic and price.
7. CASABLANCA
We still have Paris.
8. MULHOLLAND DR.
No extras to speak of, no chapter stops. The film I enjoy watching. Terrific image and terrific audio.
9. NORTH BY NORTHWEST
My statement for a single-disc film with terrific extras including commentary and score only track for a fantastic low price. Yes, Vertigo and Rear Window are better films but they don't shine like this disc does.
10. THE MONDO CANE COLLECTION
Not a great film in the bunch but collectively weird enough and presented with much care and love to make my list. Just because. Note: Chinatown would have gotten this spot but I suspect a new release will be out in 2005.

TV

1. Twin Peaks - The First Season
2. Band of Brothers
3. Disney Treasures - Tomorrowland
4. The Simpson's - Fourth Year (the best year)
5. The Dick Van Dyke Show - Season One (notice how reviewers ignored season 3 and 4 like the quality went down or something, what nonsense).
6. From Earth to the Moon
7. The Office
8. Twilight Zone - The Definitive Edition - Season One (double dip for many or otherwise it would be much higher on my list. It is terrific.)
9. Disney Treasures - On The Front Line
10. The Prisoner:Complete Series

1. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Extended Edition
Fantastic films, extended cuts that truly ad to the depth and character of the movie, and some of the most extensive extras ever produced. The video on the first two movies has flaws, but it's still very good, and the audio is unsurpassed. This is the definitive statement of what the DVD format is capable of.

2. Gone With the Wind 65th Anniversary Edition
One of the greatest movies of all time gets the work and restoration it deserves. Probably the best DVD out there for a catalog title. A fantastic effort from the people at Warner Bros.

3. Alien Quadrilogy
Two classic movies, one very flawed one, and one dud. All get great treatment, including an attempt to restore the original intent for Alien 3 despite Fox's efforts to more or less bury it forever. The real Alien 3 never happened, but Fincher's vision can at least be glimpsed on this set.

4. Fight Club 2 Disc SE
One of the first DVDs to show what was possible is still one of the best. While the movie would have eventually gotten the recognition it deserved despite the theatrical bomb, there is no question that this DVD helped speed this process up enormously.

5. Black Hawk Down Deluxe Edition
Incredible A/V and a great movie. The extras are highly informative and go the extra mile to talk about not just the movie but also the real-life events that Ridley Scott did such a great job recreating.

6. Se7en Platinum Series
Fincher knows DVD and what you can do with it, and this extensive set is no exception.

7. Toy Story Ultimate Toy Box
Two modern classics that are already some of the greatest animated movies ever. Terrific extras, and incredible visual and audio quality.

8. Fantasia Anthology
Claire de Lune. Need I say more?

9. Warner Legends Collection
Three classic films, three classic DVDs. Don't make me pick just one.

10. Pearl Harbor Vista Series
Say what you will about the movie (I know I have), but this is still a fantastic DVD set on every level. The packaging is gorgeously done, the A/V is top notch, and like BHD, the extras are very well done both in terms of the movies and the actual events surrounding it. The movie doesn't deserve to make any "Top 10" list, but it's hard to deny the DVD.

Some have been putting the Looney Tunes Golden Collection in the Television category...but I thought it was more appropriate in the Film category? Or am I wrong?

Well, the Looney Tunes could go either way, but of course you may list TV DVDs in the overall list - I just wanted to include a separate TV-on-DVD list since people requested that last year.

And I think we can allow releases from other regions, as long as you specify which region. However, it's unlikely that a non-region-1 release will make the top 100, so including one on your list is like voting for Nader. Do so if your conscience requires it, but know that you're throwing away your vote.
