i finished watching combat on dvd not too long ago.
i hadnt seen it since i was a kid, so i did not really recall any of it.
and no doubt there were things that i appreciated now that i did not then.
i think my favorite episode was when the lieutenant was in the pillbox alone with the german soldier.

Not sure these count as war shows, but they were certainly military shows. I loved both of these:
The E-Ring
The Unit

The best TV series cast in a war footing for me is far and away:

Black Adder Goes Forth. Ridiculously funny and yet, it ends with one of the most gut wrenching episodes of any show I've watched as they really get to the nuts and bolts of the fine line between bravery, fear, dread.. excellent.

M*A*S*H

Rome (HBO)

Band of Brothers (MiniSeries)
Spartacus (Showtime)

The Borgias

China Beach

The Civil War (Ken Burns Mini-Series)

I am not a big fan of war, but do understand why it needs to happen. So, TV series with a War depiction do have a special interest. I collected different sets that were available just to follow some of the battles and/or what people went through during all the wars.

I forgot about that one. You're right, it was gut wrenching and excellent.
