I had to dig up this old thread because I realized I forgot to mention my favorite release from 2000, "Photograph Smile" by Julian Lennon. I don't know how I forgot to mention it the first time.

There are no more Top 10 albums. Music is dead. Thank you for your time.

Oh God...no offense, but I cannot STAND this kind of blanket statement. If you cannot find ANY great new music, you need to turn off the crappy radio and look a little harder. It's out there, just maybe not in the mainstream.

hehe i agree w Jason. one other thing... if he believes music is dead.. why did he check out the music area :P no offense but i found it hilarous.

Ben Folds - Rockin' The Suburbs stands out. I really haven't run across too many other albums as of late that have grabbed me like this one.

I don't have as much time to listen to music as I did in the 90s, and it's good because music is getting worse... As for the releases in the 2000s that I've loved:

1) Lateralus - Tool

2) Music @ Work - The Tragically Hip

3) Salival - Tool

Geez I can't think of any others...

6) VNV Nation - Futureperfect

7) Tool - Lateralus

if you like Ladytron I'd also recommend you check out No Comment, in particular their song "Little Boy" and the album that hold the track...great stuff. I believe the band No Comment is a side project to one of the guys from the great band Wolfsheim.

NP: Lush - Downer

Since I last posted I picked up the Linkin Park and Strokes albums. Both pretty solid, though maybe not top 10 for me.

Also, Gorillaz is great, just not in my top 10 is all.

Just decided to pop my head in here. Tough to limit it to ten albums even from last year. Here are some I've been listening to a lot lately:
--The White Stipes White Blood Cells
Hadn't listened to this for awhile and can't stop spinning it tonight. Seth, you might want to check this one out.
--The Strokes Is This It?
Call it derivative but it's catchy as can be. I lucked out and found the original version (with "New York City Cops")at a Borders on the release date. The Strokes and The White Stripes were well deserving of the heat they generated at last year's SXSW.
--Jurassic 5 Quality Control
I don't listen to a lot of hip hop, but this one gets it done for me in a major way. Hooks and grooves all over the place, and to top it off, these guys are really funny AND smart.
--Spoon Girls Can Tell
Not quite sure how to describe it. Sort of moody/arty pop/rock.
--Lucinda Williams Essence
Gorgeous country/blues/rock songs shot through with pain and ecstasy. There's a good reason critics rave about her. Literate lyrics sung in something approximating a drunken southern slur. And it didn't take seven years for this album to come out.
--Beulah The Coast Is Never Clear
Great sing-a-long pop/rock. Sort of reminiscent of Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys.
--Alicia Keys Songs In A Minor
She has the talent, as is in evidence on this album. Hopefully all the accolades don't go to her head.
--Gillian Welch Time (The Revelator)
If you have the O Brother, Where Art Thou soundtrack, you need to get this. She was heavily involved with the soundtrack (and appears a couple times). This is more dour but still enjoyable listening.
--Guided By Voices Isolation Drills
Another great one from GBV. Keeping up with all of their releases is a fulltime job in and of itself, but you'd still do okay by getting this.
--Radiohead Kid A and Amnesiac
You either get it or you don't. Now if only that concert in D.C., for which I had tickets, hadn't been rained out.
--Sarah Harmer You Were Here
Pop singer/songwriter stuff that is well written and has its own charms. Might be of interest to those who like Sarah McLachlan, although it's not as "ethereal" (for lack of a better word) as her music.
--Wilco Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Yeah, I'm a lucky SOB who had someone burn a copy for me. It amazes me that Reprise wanted to make this more accessible. It isn't 'N Sync slick, but this is going to be a smash with music buffs.
--Laura Cantrell Not the Tremblin' Kind
Real straightforward, old-timey country songs. Apparently she does a weekend radio show on a New York NPR station.
--Shelby Lynne I Am Shelby Lynne
A real corker. Reminiscent of Dusty Springfield. Soulful and heartbreaking. Not as slick as her latest Love, Shelby.
--Belle & Sebastian Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant
Twee Smiths-like folk-pop. Maybe not their best album, but it has some excellent songs.
--Joe Henry Scar
The great unheard, unheralded album of last year. He goes even further into R&B territory here with terrific results.
I've probably alienated enough already. Here are some other titles:
The Apples in Stereo The Discovery of a World Inside the Moone
Sam Phillips Fan Dance
P.J. Harvey Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea
U2 All That You Can't Leave Behind
Gorillaz Gorillaz
Ryan Adams Gold
Jay Farrar Sebastopol
Damon Bramblett Damon Bramblett
Bruce Robison Country Sunshine
Bjork Vespertine
Bob Dylan Love and Theft
And you can't do badly by the Amelie and Waking Life soundtracks.
Yeah, there's nothing good anymore...
