    He's had arrythmia/tachycardia for quite a while.

What's also interesting Brits is that Blair did an interview last night (i.e. the night before he went into hospital) in which he declared that he's determined to win another general election and then retire. This is the first time a Brit Prime Minister has declared how long he wants to stay in office. It'll also be bad news for Gordon Brown the Chancellor of the Exchequer (i.e. the finance minister and in effect the second most powerful member of the government). It's strongly rumoured that years ago Blair promised Brown that in exchange for his support, he'd step aside and let Brown become Prime Minister one day. Looks as if that day is still a good few years away, and given the slow but steady decline in the popularity of Blair's party, it's a good bet that by the time Blair resigns, his party won't be a sure-fire bet for staying in power.

The Prime Minister did not have surgery. He had an ablation (either using radiofrequency or cryoablation, not sure which was used) which is performed via cardiac catheterization.
