Stephen Lawrence Winwood was natural in Handsworth, Birmingham, England. His father, Lawrence, a foundry man by trade, was a semi-professional performer, playing mostly the saxophone and clarinet. Young Winwood became involved in swing and Dixieland jazz as a boy and in progress playing drums, guitar and piano.
