This I don't understand, Tobey Maguire, a vegetarian, does a scene in Spiderman 2 where he has to eat a hot dog. So to film it, he actually eats tofu hot dogs. okay..cool, whatever. your perogative dude. If red meat or any other color meat turns you off...that's understandable.

Then I am watching Seabiscuit and he's puffing away on cigarettes. Unless they are, like non nicotine-laden fake cigarettes, which they very well may be...what is the deal with that ? I mean, turn away a nasty hot dog just for the health of it, only to suck down something known to cause cancer. ???

Please, someone more enlightened than I, explain it to me...

As Matt said. There is no connection between smoking and eating meat. Not all vegetarians are that way for health only. There are religious reasons, moral convictions, etc..., etc...

The cigarettes used in movies (and also in live theater) are herbal, not tobacco. Actors routinely complain about how vile they taste.

Slightly off-topic, but Natalie Portman has similar "beliefs" (not sure that is the most accurate term). She has stated in various interviews that she is a vegetarian but has smoked in "Closer".

almost everyone in hollywood smokes, and the "herbals" aren't as prevalent as people say. Also, most vegetarians I've met smoke as well.

It's just one of those weird things. I dunno.

Smoking cigarettes doesn't require killing any innoccent animals... they're hardly comparable.

How do you know the animals are innocent? I personally only eat hamburgers ground from cows executed for their crimes.

(sorry for the bad joke, but this discussion sounds like its going to turn into a shouting fest)

My brother is a sort of vegetarian. He'll eat chicken occassionally, but doest eat any other sort of meat. He also smokes.

In his opinion the air, current condition of water, chemicals & hormones in food, etc - are just as bad as cigarettes.

BTW, I smoked for years, but was also very active. I had physical jobs and spent 3 hours in the gym 4 nights a week.I jogged, played sports. All while I smoked a pack a day.

I never felt the affects of smoking until I got a desk job, and realized I had to quit.

"I mean, turn away a nasty hot dog just for the health of it, only to suck down something known to cause cancer"

I know 2 people who died of cancer at a young age who never smoked in their life. Cancer is pretty much a epidemic now and its nots all because of smoking so I tend to agree with my brother.

My G/F shops at a place with a lot of organic foods and Ive been trying to do the same more lately as well.

Benson, how can you be sure the cows weren't falsely executed? If modern DNA evidence clears a bovine I've already noshed on... well, it's too disturbing to contemplate.

(Okay, I apologize for the poor taste... no bun, er, pun intended.)

As a (sadly) trained nucleat engineer, I learned that you get more nicotine as a smoker per year than you could working closely around a (well shielded) nuclear power plant. And, as it's taken inside the skin (one of your best shields), it goes directly to your cells.

In short, think of cancer of "winning the lottery". You get "tickets" from the sun, radiated energy from the ground, etc. You can get cancer with even a few tickets. Smoking simply buys you a LOT of tickets.

No moral judgement here. Like eating meat (which I LOVE), it's a personal preference. Unlike eating meat, there is no such thing as second hand meat consumption. But I know a few smokers who are quite conscientious of others.

    So...life is tough.

    Wear a cup,
    Chuck

His opinion is wrong, and comes across as a lame rationalization for smoking.

Smoking only kills innocent non-smokers via second hand smoke. [IMG]

I find that interesting. I didn't know you could get any nicotine from a nuclear power plant.
