These studios and boutique companies sure has us pegged with these steel book releases. From my perspective, if I can't get the steel book on the initial 4K/UHD release then forget about it. I'm not going to double-dip in order to increase their profit margin.
I almost always only buy a steelbook, if that is the only option available, such as with the Panic Room or the Lionsgate Basic Instinct 4K UHD releases. However, I purchased the Se7ven 4K UHD steelbook, even though there was a DigiPack available, because the DigiPack in that case is so badly designed, that the discs are difficult to remove.

That said, in most cases, there seems to be more effort put into the artwork for the steelbooks. A notable exception being Lionsgate's Basic Instinct, which looks as though it was designed by a 10-year-old graphic designer ;)

I tend to think all but the most ardent steelbook fans are rolling their eyes at all the re-releases that have been going on lately and the trend will begin to die down. Yes, yes, it's collectors fueling much more of the home video market now but I've watched enough different fields of "collectibles" largely collapse to know that you can quickly burn out collectors and that constant re-releases and high prices that are the quickest way to do it.

Money grabs bore me - steelbooks included. Why not simply release a steelbook and regular edition together, day and date, and let the public decide which they'd prefer?
Unfortunately, it's because they know that they can make more money by making people pay more for a box than giving them a less expensive box-less option.

Yup, this hobby is getting more expensive during a time when even the basic stuff that people need to live on is getting much more expensive due to inflation and tariffs. Guess which discretionary spending is going to decrease during this rising pricing crisis? A rhetorical question because I'm a big collector and even I have cut back on his physical media spending. Boutique companies placing tariff pricing will only encourage me to further decrease my physical media spending going forward.

Obviously, cost of living is a large part of it but the boutique labels have already mined alot of the best cult titles from the 70's and 80's so they are now trying to manufacture cult movies from 90's studio pictures. If they keep doing that, I think the higher end boutique labels are going to need to readjust their pricing. Vinegar Syndrome and Arrow do great work but charging $50-ish for movies like Drop Zone, Congo, Jade, Deep Blue Sea or Swordfish is definitely not going to last.

Warner Bros. have done this every now and then - Furiosa and Se7ven being a couple of recent examples. In both those cases, the steelbooks sold out immediately. So they know that steelbooks are more desirable to the collector, than an amray case edition - if there is a choice on the day of release.

Like our moderator Robert, I will never double-dip for a steelbook, released after the initial amray case, if the content included in the package is identical. I only double-dip for content upgrades.

I view SteelBooks as an attempt by the studio to get rid of excess inventory.

Can't sell enough copies of the standard release? Put the same disc in expensive, attractive packaging and try again.

Why are they even called steelbooks, as they aren't made of actual steel. They're some type of bendable aluminum at best.

Some of these are a bit more durable then others, but they can bend just like than an iPhone can.

This poster I just found would have made a better cover than the actual poster, as it glows in the dark.

Good point. Trying to sell all the pressed discs is likely the reason why different packaging gets put out on different dates.

I like to buy discs with minimal packaging so opt for the regular edition. Hopefully, these are released at the same time as the steelbook (North by Northwest) or I will wait for the regular release (To Catch a Thief).

minus the glow in the dark function that would have made a perfect cover for the UHD release just missing the VistaVision at the bottom, the only thing i see as a positive in the steelbook is that they are using the original poster as coverart. But i agree with others, this is only becoming increasingly expensive if the only option is a much higher priced steelbook.

I was hoping the original 4K release would have been a Steelbook. I will likely bite on this because I like that they used the original poster art.

I’ve already bought this movie from every home video DVD and blu ray release. Including the laser disc. Why not get one more for the collection!

I'm in for this one. I didn't purchase the 4K release last year, after getting bit by the poor Paramount Presents blu-ray release of 2020.

For me, I'll only double dip on a release if the new on-disc extras are substantial enough to justify the purchase - like the multiple times I've bought the Dollars Trilogy (MGM, Kino Lorber, Arrow) on blu-ray. (A marginal improvement in the transfer quality is something I shrug at.) The Paramount tradition of dangling shiny new packaging of the same old disc has worn thin after watching them do that for years with the Star Trek franchise.

Currently a $13.99 preorder on Amazon, so no complaints about the price on this one. Amazon’s probably matching someone else.

I must be seeing a different pre-order as the link above shows $29.99 and doesn’t specify it’s a 4K UHD.
