Starting next month, I'm going to be watching TNG and DS9 with my wife, who has never watched them (but wants to). We don't have time for every episode, probably just 2 or 3 a week. So, my question is this: Which 30-50 episodes of each TNG and DS9 would you choose to present the best or each show, and which would include the arcs of each show (Borg, Klingon, Dominion, etc.), and which would showcase some of the best performances in each (Stewart, Spiner, DeLancie, Brooks, Dorn, Siddig, etc etc)? That's 60-100 episodes total. I haven't watched many of these since I got the DVDs in 2002-2003, so it will be fun for me too, but I haven't made a list yet. My guess is that the sequential nature of the DS9 storytelling will require more episodes than TNG, but I am open to anything.

TNG: Seasons 3-6 are the best

DS9: Seasons 4-7 cover the most Dominion plot. You could take out the Mirror episodes and the Ferengi ones and not miss much.

I'd definately start in the third season of TNG, though the first few in that season aren't great. As for DS9 I would start in season four and as Kyle suggests, skip the mirror universe episodes and the ferengi episodes. Though I personally also skip the Klingon ones on second viewing, but I'm not a big Klingon fan.

I say begin with the final episode of season 2 of DS9, and choose the selected Dominion - focused episodes of season 3 if you don't want to view the entire season.

If you want to view the entire Dominion arc, why not start at its beginning?

It's not like watching earlier episodes of DS9 are a chore or anything like that.

Here are my recommendations for TNG:

    Season 1:
    • Encounter at Farpoint - You're right, gotta have the pilot.
    • 11001001 - Carolyn McCormack steams up this one, when holodeck episodes were still original.
    • Skin of Evil - Because without it, "Yesterday's Enterprise" is confusing.
    • Neutral Zone - Sort of effective episode that launches the Borg storyline.
    Season 2:
    • A Matter of Honor - Riker serves on a Klingon ship. Ever wonder why Klingon episodes were so popular? Watch this one.
    • Measure of a Man - Not just the best episode of Season 2 but one of the best episodes of the series.
    • Q Who? - Meet the Borg.
    • The Emissary - Not bad and necessary to understand a later episode.
    Season 3:
    • Ensigns of Command - The first episode that told me that Season 3 was going to be a big improvement.
    • Who Watches the Watches - Hey, it's Leland Palmer!
    • The Enemy - Geordi and Romulan in a production of "The Defiant Ones"
    • The Defector - Romulan defector warns the Enterprise of an iminent invasion.
    • The Hunted - Renegade soldier leads the Enterprise on a wild chase.
    • The High Ground - Crusher kidnapped by hunky terrorist.
    • Deja Q - Q gets his omnipotence license revoked.
    • Yesterday's Enterprise - Tasha Yar returns in a dark alternate universe where the Federation is getting its ass kicked by the Klingons.
    • Sins of the Father - Worf has to take one for the team when his family history is at the center of Klingon power struggle.
    • Sarek - Spock's ailing father needs Picard to finish his last mission.
    • The Best of Both Worlds - Part I - Still the best cliffhanger in Trek history. One of the best in TV history.
    Season 4:
    • The Best of Both Worlds - Part II - While it was probably impossible to live up the part I, Part II manages to land on its feet.
    • Family - Picard goes home to France, where everyone speaks with an English accent.
    • Brothers - Brent Spiner does triple duty.
    • Reunion - K'Ehlyer returns (yes!), having given birth the most useless character in Trek history.
    • Future Imperfect - Riker winds up in the future with a son who really bugs him.
    • Final Mission - Bye, bye, Wesley!
    • The Wounded - The Cardassians join the party.
    • First Contact - One man's Enterprise is another man's UFO.
    • Indentity Crisis - Geordi's past catches up with him in a weird way.
    • Q-Pid - Worth the trip just for Worf's "Belushi" moment.
    • The Drumhead - It's "McCarthyism in Spaaaaaaaaaaaaace!"
    • The Mind's Eye - "The Romulan Candidate"
    • Redemption - Part I - Klingon civil war gives Worf a chance to regain the favor of his people.
    Season 5:
    • Redemption - Part II - As Worf fights a losing battle, Picard deals with a blonde Romulan with a dumb backstory.
    • Darmok - (look for a young Ashley Judd [IMG])
    • Ensign Ro - "Adm. Cain" joins the crew.
    • Disaster - The "Enterprise Adventure"
    • Unification - Parts I & II - Picard groks Spock.
    • Condundrum - The Enterprise crew has one big senior moment.
    • Cause and Effect - "What? Didn't we see this poker game already?"
    • The First Duty - Wesley screws up. Picard talks to a martian working at Starfleet Academy.
    • I, Borg - He followed me home, Mom. Can I assimilate him?
    • The Next Phase - Things to do on the Enterprise when you're dead.
    • The Inner Light - Picard "gets a life."
    Season 6:
    • Relics - Scotty!
    • Chain of Command - Parts I & II - Picard's very bad day.
    • Face of the Enemy - Troi gets an Extreme Romulan Makeover
    • Tapestry - Picard's misspent youth could kill him.
    • Starship Mine - Lyta Alexander tries to steal the Enterprise! Picard goes Bruce Willis on her ass.
    • The Chase - TNG does a pretty good imitation of a TOS episode.
    • Second Chances - Riker's just beside himself!
    • Timescape - An episode so boring, time just seems to stand still. It was standing still?! Never mind then.
    Season 7:
    • Gambit - Parts I & II - Picard's a pirate! Arrrr!
    • Parallels - Alternate Realities fire sale, everything must go!
    • The Pegesus - Despite being the setup for the lame-ass finale of Enterprise, this episode rocked.
    • Lower Decks - Grunts-eye view of life on the Big E.
    • Journey's End - We finally get rid of Wesley and set up some plot lines that will continue in DS9
    • Preemptive Strike - Lt. Ro's loyalties are tested as she goes undercover.
    • All Good Things... - Picard teams up with himself and himself to save the universe again.

No matter how bad they are, you have to watch the premiere episodes.

I dunno. TNG isn't nearly as arc-intensive as DS9 is, but it all builds on itself. I understand you can only watch 2-3 shows a week, but I think every show is required viewing at least once.

Example: Q is introduced in Encounter at Farpoint. That appearance is referenced in Hide and Q. His introducing the Enterprise to the Borg in Q Who is referenced in The Best of Both Worlds I. The Borg have their last stand on TNG in S7 (Descent II) which features Lore, Data's brother, formerly seen in S1 (Datalore) and S4 (Brothers).

I do think Paul's list is rather complete up there, but I would add Conspiracy (S1) to it. And, like Dan said, Encounter at Farpoint (S1) is the pilot and begins the entire series.

As for DS9, there are a LOT of gems in there that have nothing or very little to do with the overall Dominion or Bajoran/Cardassian arcs. The excellent Progress and Duet from S1; the remarkable opening trilogy of S2; the Mirror universe episodes; Chimera and Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang from S7; The Visitor, Rejoined, Little Green Men and The Quickening from S4...and so on.

    DS9 S1:
    Emissary (90 minute movie)
    Progress
    Duet
In the Hands of the Prophets

    DS9 S2:
    The Homecoming
    The Circle
    The Siege
    Necessary Evil
    Blood Oath
    The Maquis I/II
    The Jem'Hadar

    DS9 S3:
    The Search I/II
    Past Tense I/II
    Improbable Cause/The Die is Cast
    The Adversary

    DS9 S4:
The Way of the Warrior (90 minute movie)
    Homefront/Paradise Lost
    To the Death
    Broken Link

    DS9 S5:
    Apocalypse Rising
    Trials and Tribble-ations
    In Purgatory's Shadow/By Inferno's Light
    Call to Arms

    DS9 S6:
Opening six episodes (A Time to Stand-->Sacrafice of Angels)
    Far Beyond the Stars
    In the Pale Moonlight
    Tears of the Prophets

    DS9 S7:
Last ten episodes (Penumbra-->What You Leave Behind)

Again, watch them all. Some aren't as good as others, obviously, but it's all part of the universe. My BF and I are watching Buffy very slowly. Maybe one episode every two weeks. But it's never been suggested we do a "greatest hits" of sorts.

I *love* Paul's TNG list, above; and Jason's DS9 list is also very good.

    I would add to that:
    TNG:
    Season 1:
Encounter at Farpoint - The debut episode.

Conspiracy - Probably the stand-out epsiode of a very weak first season.

Skin of Evil - This is *not* all that great of an episode; but it provides a necessary link to Season Three's "Yesterday's Enterprise" which is one of the best shows in the series.

    Season 3:
The Ensigns of Command - "He wants the impossible!" "That's the short definition of Captain!"

    Who Watches the Watchers?

    DS9:
    Season 4:
The Visitor - One of the best episodes in all of Trek.

    Season 7:
Once More Unto the Breach - One of the best Trek Klingon eps.

To tell you the truth, I have a hard time being objective with DS9. The entire seven year run was extremely strong. As Jason said "Watch them all!"

The only one so far that I'd add is:

    TNG Season 6's
Face of the Enemy which is one of my favorite looks at the Romulans ever. I've also got a weird fondness for the 4th season episode First Contact but I'm not about to say that one's to everyone's taste.

Updated my TNG list with a few suggestions. I did miss a few!

I like Jason's DS9 list, but I'd like to add my suggestions.

    Season 1:
    • Past Prologue - Really laid out the conflict at the heart of Kira's character and introduced Garak.
    Season 2:
    • The Wire - A strong Garak episode that really develops his character.
    Season 3:
    • Defiant - Riker's double is back and puttin' the moves on Kira.
    Season 4:
    • The Visitor
    • Rejoined
    • Rules of Engagement
    • Hard Time
    Season 5:
    • Nor the Battle to Strong
    • Soldiers of the Empire
    • Empok Nor
    Season 6:
    • The Sound of her Voice
    Season 7:
    • Image in the Sand
    • Shadows and Symbols
    • Afterimage
    • Treachery, Faith and the Great River
    • Once More Unto the Breach
    • The Seige of AR-558

Paul, I can't believe you added "Time's Arrow" and "Descent". TA was a boring and pretentious two parter when the show should have done a one episode finale. Descent was just...part I was fine, fine entertainment; part II was a degeneration for everyone involved. It was the beginning of the "hey, we have one year left and we've already packed our stuff for the beach". Blech. [IMG]

And I won't disagree with any of your additions to the DS9 list. It was hard omitting things like Dax, Rejoined, Crossover and many other shows because they all contribute in some way to the overall storyline (even the wretched Rules of Aquisition). I tried to stick with the shows that had the most to do with the main storyline(s).

Yeah, I was on the fence about those two. I could take 'em or leave 'em, but I was trying to include all of the cliffhangers. Consider those optional.

You know, even if you're going to screen only three episodes a week, watch them all. Remember, originally, we all had to watch just one episode a week with these series back when they first aired. Also, am I the only one here who loves the DS9 episode "For the Uniform"?

Why do you all put Conspiracy on your lists? I thought it was an awful episode that has been done time and time again on so many sci fi shows.

All the Eddington eps are great IMO.

Not at all. The entire second half of S4 is good stuff.

I love that one, and For the Cause, as well. Blaze Of Glory petered out a bit, although it was still good, but the first two are really powerful. Seasons 4 and 5 of DS9, along with season 3 of TNG are the very best and most consistent years of the franchise (except maybe TOS season 1).

As for watching them all, hey, I have no problem with that, but this exercise was a way to introduce my wife to these two shows, since she has expressed interest. I wanted her to see the best they had to offer first, and give her what she needs to understand what's going on. I don't want her to lose interest, which I am afraid she might by the time we got to, say, Home Soil.

After we do TNG and DS9, we're moving on to Babylon 5 and the modern Battlestar Galactica. (Both of which have to be watched in their entirety, more or less.)

And for the record, she's turned me on to a few shows that I now love (and which we collect on DVD), including The West Wing and The Gilmore Girls.

You can skip some stuff in season one of B5, and off the top of my head... Gray 17 Is Missing is forgetable, but i know what you mean.

How did we switch to Babylon 5? I keep looking back, but I'm not seeing it anywhere. [IMG]
