Having just moved here, I could use all the advise I can get.

Also, I have been relying on online driving directions to get where I want to go. Is there a service out there that stands out among the rest? I've been using Yahoo Maps so far.

    Thanks

    welcome...
i used mapquest until i got to know my way around. my first month here, i would just ride my motorcycle around to get a "feel" for where everything was.
i've been here over a year and still haven't got it all figured out. [IMG]

Everybody who lives here thinks the Thomas Guide should be standard equipment with all vehicle purchases. Pick one up at any newsstand. It's a pretty thick, spiral-bound book of maps.

Even so, few large cities are as easy to navigate as Los Angeles. It's next to impossible to get lost. Nearly all streets are laid out on an east/west/north/south grid. As long as you know where a major street is—Sunset, Santa Monica, Pico, Olympic—and you know which direction you're headed in, you will always be able to find your way around.

The only really confusing street for newcomers is San Vicente.

echo jack's statement about the thomas guide. it's really the definitive mapping company. we used to simply tell friends, go to page 117, grid A3. then we leave it up to them to find us. [IMG]
also, get used to the freeway system. there's a bunch, but it's not that difficult. just remember which major ones run east & west (60, 10, 210) and which ones run north and south (405, 605, 710?). ps - it's been a while since i lived in la, so double-check my work.
finally, it's kind of fun to just go exploring. check out all the major tourist traps and get a feel for where you are. obviously, stay clear of "dangerous" neighborhoods, but if go exploring in beverly hills or pasadena you should be okay...
[edit] i forgot to mention that there's a "system" to the freeway numbers. the 10 connects to the 210 and 710. the 5 connects to the 405 and 605, etc. i'm not exactly sure how it works anymore...maybe someone can expound.

Move to Lancaster or Palmdale, everyone else seems to be doing that. [IMG]
I would not leave the house in the morning without checking 'Traffic on the Sevens' or 'Traffic on the Fours'. Only locals will understand that.
Seriously, I havent ventured down below yet, except to go to Ontario Airport via the 138 and 15. I was doing 80 and seemed to be the slowest vehicle on the road.

Well, it just may become one large city some day. And I bet before fifty years from now, no one will be able to tell where Los Angeles ends and San Diego begins. As it is, it's almost continuous urbanity from here down to the other town.

    Thanks for the info.

What about radio stations? Anything but "top forty" is preferable. I heard Harry Shearer has a radio show. Is it any good?

Same here, just a little light-hearted commentary on my part. I hope I didn't offend any citizens of Compton, Watts, South Central, or Long Beach. [IMG]
And yes, we folks way out here in Boston, Taxachusetts, also have our "bad neighborhoods" (Dorchester, Mattapan, Roxbury). [IMG]
