In a new bit of news Timeplitters 2 has been announced to be offline. The developers have removed the online multiplayer component for the game citing the lack of an infrastructure as being the culptrit.
The game held a bit of interest for me and I would have liked to see it come out with online play. Its disappointing though hopefully the added focus on the single player game will make it worth it nonethless.
    Heres the report:
    TS2 Offline

This is a very sad thing. I hope they decide to somehow make an add-on disc to enable online play (like Frequency).

At least we still have iLink/ethernet LAN connectivity.

that's a cop out if i've ever heard on before. Tony hawk 3 was released with online multiplayer functionality. Can't say I've ever tried it, but anyone with a USB ethernet card can do it already.

The report does mention that the XBOX version will have System Link capability so it should work with tunnelling software.

Nothing like cancelling features at the last second, eh?

According to EGM's website, there are rumors that Eidos and SCEA were negotiating to use SCEA servers for the game and the negotiations failed. It also says that the PS2 version supports iLink and LAN support, but since it supports a LAN, couldn't tunnel software (like the one for X-Box) be made for it?

I'm just glad that the Xbox version will support the system link.

Indeed, Brian, but it appears the Xbox version wasn't going to have it from the get-go, rather than having the feature pulled due to issues with how Sony's handling the online component...

It's not a good sign when developers start dumping the online features because your model sucks...

this is the most shitty news Ive heard all week!!

i really hope this doesnt become a trend..or Sony will have big problems. (trust me, Im a Sony Fanboy from day 1, but this kinda crap wont last with me)

thank god I can still look forward to the Xbox Live network too, unless developers start pulling outta that too.

now, if SOCOM announed that it wouldnt support Online Play either, then there would be some killing sprees going on!!

Sorry, Chris. Even with the smiley, it read to me that you were getting a dig in at Sony's plans, not Microsoft's.

And Joel, I'm trying to find out whether it was planned for XBox Live or not right now.

    [added]
Which I just did. Yup, the plan was for PS2 online only, with Xbox being system link only. So it's just PS2 online that got ditched.

    Interesting.

No problem Brian I was criticising Sony in a backhanded manner. [IMG]
I do find it ironic that a developer is cancelling an online option for the PS2 because they do not have the time (or resources?) to set up the infrastructure needed for online gaming. At the same time on the XBOX, MS has created the XBOX Live service so that gaming developers do not have to worry about any infrastructure. The only problem is TS2 was never going to be online for the XBOX anyway. As a XBOX owner I am not sure if I should laugh or cry! [IMG]

I think "lack of infrastructure" is being used as a euphemism for "it didn't make financial sense." Whether that means they couldn't charge for the service, they didn't want to pony up the cash for MS to maintain servers, or both, who knows?

As a consumer I'd be interested to know why they dismissed XBox online support rightaway & planned for it only to be on the XBox... Know what I mean?

I'm hoping Chris' question gets answered, as I've wondered that myself. When I first heard that Madden wasn't going to be on XBL I figured it was because EA wanted to set their own pricing structure for online play. Then they announce that it will be free to play for the PS2. Huh? [IMG]
It's probably nothing that can be answered definitively here on the forum (unless any EA execs are lurking? [IMG]) but it sure is curious...
