I know this movie probably falls in the guilty pleasure category, but I always liked it. I even bought the Region 2 Japanese version just to get it in widescreen (non-anamorphic).

I can't believe the only US version is P/S. Are there any plans for a US reissue in anamorphic widescreen? Anyone hear anything?

    Thanks,

    Thos.

Universal has never given any indication they were planning to. I have long since bought the Region 2 anamorphic PAL version. While my friend was on a trip to Australia this summer, I had him grab me the Region 4 anamorphic PAL version of Sudden Death. What kind of a country is this when you can't get your Van Damme cheese without compromising the artistic integrity of the great Peter Hyams.

R2 UK used to have WS with 5.1 sound, then come cheapo company got the rights and authored it as FS with 2.0 Stereo. Ugh!

As Mathew says Universal in the UK are are complete joke. Anything they think is not mainstream they are fobbing off to a budget label Prism. I have the original release which is anamorphic widescreen.
They are only keeping the titles like Jaws, Casino and Apollo 13 which are their big sellers.

What is suprising is this that the original DVD master is not made available so Prism just make there own cheap P/S efforts. Looking at the packaging it still says copyright Universal so its just they can't be bothered to release them via they own Universal UK DVD company.

I, too, would like a new anamorphic widescreen release of this. I have this movie on laserdisc which is widescreen. It only has a Pro-Logic soundtrack, but its PCM and its actually pretty good. Since the elements obviously exist, I dont know why Universal wont get their butts in gear.

It actually has the Largo Entertainment logo featured quite prominently on the case, suggesting to me they whipped the rights from under Universal's nose.

And I haven't seen many Universal films handed to Prism - Tartan, on the other hand...

Uhhh...actually, TIMECOP was shown on the Universal HD channel a couple of days ago. It was 16x9, but sadly--not presented in it's original scope aspect ratio.

So, it would seem that TIMECOP still belongs to Universal.

    Regards,

    - Shane D.

This is one of Van Dammes better movies. I'd probably pick this up.

There was a DTS laserdisc of this movie. Must've sounded great.

So are you looking for version that has it in full six-track Dolby Digital?

They are very rare to come by now, so look around the second shops you may have better luck there, than the local HMV.

But how come there's no widescreen version of Sudden Death on DVD? I'd buy it if there was. Same goes for Timecop. Both are good Hyams/Van Damme team-ups. Full screen just cannot do justice to Van Damme doing the splits in the kitchen.

The only thing funnier than that scene was when Letterman spoofed it on his show. I can't believe Street Fighter has a better disc than those two. Until they come in widescreen, there is no reason to trade up from the LDs. (Even though Hyams didn't make it, an unrated Hard Target would also be nice. Make it a boxed set, since the same studio made all three. Just keep The Quest out of it.)

I was discussing VanDamme with some friends, I would love "Timecop" and "Hard Target" in decent editions. And since I'm not really loosing sleep by not having these, I well wait until they are released right.

I have a feeling alot of the Universal films like Timecop, Death Becomes Her, The Shadow, Backdraft, Parenthood, and anything else that had a awful DVD release will not be upgraded until they go to HiDef DVD. It really sucks that after almost 10 years and thousands of dollars spent we will be forced to start all over again. The studios really know how to screw the consumer.
