Anyone use a NAS for Time Machine backups for home or even small business use? I'm noodling on buying a Synology box to setup network storage for our home and moving our Mac's TimeMachine backup system to a NAS box and stop using individual, retail external hard drives.

My two concerns are whether it is robust (once upon a time TimeMachine wasn't supported or didn't work well over the network) and if it's fast enough (because Time Machine is notorious for hogging CPU on a slow computer or a slow drive).

According to Apple, it can be done.

“Network-attached storage (NAS) device that supports Time Machine over SMB

Many third-party NAS devices support Time Machine over SMB. For details, check the documentation for your NAS device.”

I’ve never tried it. When I used an AEBS, my Time Machine was plugged into that. When I moved to a mesh network, I started plugging the external HDD directly I to my MacBook Pro. Now that I use a Mac Mini, the external drive always stays plugged in.
