So, I just got done reading a thread on THXU2 and it sounds like it works like Logic 7 and will extract information from the original 5.1 source and create two new discrete so to speak channels. Correct?
Now with that, when it extracts the information to create the 2 extra channels, where does it extract that data from? Is it getting it from just the side surrounds, or does it extract from all 5 speakers to create the 2 rears?
Furthermore, when you go to a public theater, you see bunghole loads of speakers on the sides and rear. How many true discrete channels are there? 5.1? 6.1? 7.1? More?
Now if there is say at least 7.1 truly discrete channels of movie sound goodness in a public theater, then why is dolby digital and dts only 5.1 for the home?
    Thanks all[IMG]

    Rick,

for normal DD there are 5.1 channels playing back. The same for normal DTS(although DTS allows for an extra 2 channels behind the screen, this is used only in 70mm presentations). For SDDS there are 5.1 (or 7.1 with the extra 2 channels also being behind the screen). In addition to the 3 or 5 behind-the-screen channels, there are separate left and right surround channels in these modes.

For EX/ES type films there are 6.1 PLAYBACK (not discreet) channels, with the extra channel being added along the rear wall of the theatre. Although DTS-ES offers a discreet back-channel for home audio, this is not the case in commercial releases.

THXU2 doesn't make "discrete" channels, it makes matrixed cahnnels, like DD-EX does. It pulls the info from the side surrounds and makes the 7.1 sound. It's for 5.1 soundtracks that don't have DD-EX or DTS-ES Matrix encoding, I think it sounds good.
