THX is a very confusing topic for most people (this is THX's fault and not yours). First we need to understand some terms to answer your question:

A THX DVD: This means that the people who work at THX watched over the mastering of the DVD and give their seal of approval as to its quality. (whether this actually means anything is an entirely different discussion). Physically there is NO difference between a THX DVD and a non-THX DVD. They will act exactly the same to a DVD player.

THX mode on your receiver: This mode will provide some post-processing to the sound signal before going out to your speakers. Many people love the processing done in THX mode while others can't stand it. It's just a preference thing.

The thing to keep in mind is that the THX stamp on a DVD has ABSOLUTLY NOTHING to do with the THX mode on your receiver. They are completely different! The THX sticker on the DVD is just like a Good House Keeping Seal of Approval. Whereas the THX mode on your receiver is actually doing post-processing to your sound. A DVD does not have to have the THX stamp on it to be able to watch it in THX mode on your receiver. You could even listen to the FM radio in THX mode if you wanted to. They are completely unrelated.

I hope this helps a little.

Like so many questions, this one is addressed in the HTF Beginner's Primer and FAQ. Use the link in my signature, and look for the discussion of THX.
