Though he’s better known today for his collaboration with actress Marlene Dietrich, director Josef von Sternberg carved out a successful career in both the silent and sound eras of Hollywood. With a penchant for distinctive visuals – often endowed with striking compositions – and a relentless camera, he helped create the gangster genre (Underworld, 1927) and often imbued his movies with emotional intensity; with the arrival of sound, he viewed the burgeoning medium as a great opportunity to explore new possibilities and put that to the test with Thunderbolt. Long unavailable on home video for years, Kino has finally given the movie its belated debut on Blu-ray.
