Is it really necessary to use threaded rod support. What if I just Grizzly glue the endcap and silicon around the outside lip and then every 3-4" use .75 inch wood screws to fast the end caps? Would this be feasible?

The threaded rods aren't needed with an 18" tube. If the diameter of the tube was greater than 24"; they would probably be beneficial if the endcaps weren't made thick enough.
