I am very interested in the outlaw series of amps/receivers.
im thinking about getting the 1050 $499 american, but I also like the deal for the 950 and 775 amp $2800 american.
Anyone have any thoughts on this. also I was looking at the sony projector for 2999.00 american. I think it's 3999 cdn. Is there any others that are in this price range...I havent seen any.
thanks

Which Sony Projector? Model no.? Have you seen a DLP projector in action? If not, you should first. The situation with "rainbows" is serious enough to warrnt viewing one prior to purchase. Although many report no problems - those who are effected are reduced to tears during the suffering.....

The 950/775 combo is as good as it gets for the entry into separates. Nothing but good reports from those auditioning them....

Jason,

You really should also add the Rotel combination (pre/pro and amps) to your short list as well. Both Rotel and Outlaw have products in similar price ranges and you will get passionate opinions on both lines.

And on the FP front? You mentioned a Sony projector. Based on the price range you mentioned are you sure it isn't an LCD projector? Can you give us a model number as others have asked? The reason I say this is because I have owned a Sony VW10HT LCD front projector for over two years and I love it. Recently the 10HT was replaced with a newer model, the VW11HT, (slightly better specs which I consider evolutionary rather than revolutionary) which has resulted in some great pricing on the remaining 10HTs.

At the recent NYC HT Expo I spent considerable time looking at the latest single chip DLP models and, while they are much better looking to me than earlier 1 chip DLPs regarding the "rainbow" effect that Dave mentioned, the ones that I liked best (single chip DLP) still are two or three times as expensive as a Sony LCD.

You really have to view these projectors to see if they are a match for your needs and your room requirements.

Happy hunting.

Steve-

If you're adventurous, you might want to checkout CRT projectors. They require a lot more knowledge and setup than DLP but provide the absolute best quality available. Good used units start at ~$1500 cdn and even at that level they will blow *any* DLP unit away.

hey guys

the projector that im refering to is vpl-hs1 I viewed it at a home theater store on woodbine ave in markam. I liked it but my dealer here said there are way better ones for the same price. he sells the sony to so i trust them they never led me wrong yet....as for the receiver front, i have decided to get the marantz sr 4200. the best in it's price range as far as sound is concerned, i went and listened to the marantz sr4200, the denon 2802, onkyo 494, panasonic he-100, and the kenwood 6ch......marantz as far as im concerned are the best sounding and best built units around.....thanks for the help guys, and what are your thoughts on the marantz? thanks

Steve,

Just be aware that this is Ned's opinion and others might disagree with that assessment. While CRT's can provide a great picture as Ned mentioned they come with a lot of baggage and have a lot of disadvantages as well. For example, while they have better black levels, they do not have uniform edge to edge brightness as other types of projectors and many CRTs don't do 16:9 aspect ratios well without a lot of accesories, etc. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

CRTs vs DLPs, LCDs, etc. will elicit as many opinions as there are types of units and you will get passionate thoughts from all camps. Like anything else, let your eyes, your pocketbook, your patience, your HT environment and your personal preferences be your guide.

I'll have to disagree with you there, RAF. CRT's almost always are able to "squeeze" the raster to a 16x9 ratio. It is the digital units which are natively 4:3 that have to use lenses and other such arrangements.
Also, even with a 4:3 CRT, the black bars are just that - black - invisible.
CRT's are a major PITA to set up properly, though. Also, they'll keep you tweaking, so if you're not that type, stay away. :)
