You know, it would be so goddamned simple for all studios to publish a brief statement in their publicity and on their DVD cases to indicate what the original aspect ratio was. Just add the info into the grid some studios use (and for those who don't use the grid, start to!) In one rectangular box of the grid, you would list three ratios: the ratio the movie was actually filmed in (say, 1.33), second, the ratio the film is intended to be seen in (say, 1.85:1), then, the ratio of the DVD in hand (say, 1.85:1 again), which would give you something like the digital (AAD or DDD, etc.) code that used to turn up on CD's. It would be like "1.33/1.85/1.85." Think of how much less angst there would be about new and upcoming releases if we were actually given INFORMATION!!!

Well, we can find the aspect ratios for modern films easily. Its the films of the 50's and 60's that are a pain in the neck, and Disney films are almost a special case unto themselves.
