Discussion from my Expository Prose class- wondered if anyone had any thoughts on the matter?

My list was:
* How to ask your parents for money while alluding but not directly stating that you will pay them back.
* How to tie a necktie.
* How to sleep with your eyes open.
* How to take constructive criticism.
* How to rob Peter to pay Paul.
* How to make yourself look good without resorting to making others look bad.
* How to determine (by look or smell) when certain foods are no longer safe to eat.
* How to wash your clothes without significant shrinkage or turning everything pink.

Nice ones Vince! (I still can't remember how to tie a tie!) :)
Julie, do I sense a kind of general critique in your post? :)
Hey, just because you know how all that stuff is done doesn't mean you actually get around to do it! :D

I'm surprised anyone noticed. I thought I was being ever so subtle
Anyway, when I went to college I saw many guys who didn't have the slightest idea of how to use a washing machine. It was real funny watching them try to figure out what to do.

I actually met my wife in a laundromat in college. It was my first try at doing laundry, and I must have had that helplees/confused look on my face. She took pity on me and helped me out. The rest is history. Even better, she does ALL the laundry now.:emoji_thumbsup:

Pump your own gas, and change a flat tire. You'd be surprised by how helpless some young people are these days.

1. Throw-up gracefully on your 21st birthday
2. Pay bills on time
3. Laundry
4. Cook (something other than toast)
5. Be in debt
6. No more rude comments to women (I am still working on this one at the age of 27) just kidding. :)
7. Know that 99% of domestic beer is crap
8. St. Patrick's day is a better holiday than Easter
9. Everything (you will learn around 24 that you don't know shit) :D

By 21 you should be able to live on your own, independent of mommy and daddy.
That means you should be able to...
- Buy your own clothes
- Shop for your own groceries
- Cook, clean, and launder
- Drive a car? You should be able to drive a car when you are 16. By 21, you should be able to keep a car drive-worthy...check your tires, change (or have changed) your oil, etc.
- Financial things: balance a checkbook (actually, you should be able to do that when you are 12); pay your bills; if you have a credit card, use it responsibly; do your taxes (although it will probably be a 1040EZ or 1040A).
- Know your limits...drink responsibly.
- Er, uh..."sleep" responsibly.
Also, by 21, if you want to get anywhere in this world, you should:
- Be well on your way through college.
- Be able to write a decent cover letter.
- Have a nice-looking resume with some actual experience.
By the time I was 21, I had finished college and had started my first real job. Of course, I started school when I was 4. :)

Interesting question, Vince...
Cook an omelette
Drive a manual transmission
Spell
Accept a compliment
Play an instrument
De-frag a hard drive
Shop for a car
Ask for directions
(I can do them all except that last one :D)

I'll second the:
cooking
cleaning
general handieness
basic education
and I'll raise:
- Mix at least 3 good cocktails which don't have the words "sex" "slam" "bang" or any other euphamisms in the name.
- be able to find the clitoris, even in the dark ;)
(yes it's sexual, but not nasty. I'm just spoilering it so that people who don't want to look don't have to)
- pronounce "prix fixe" without stumbling over it.

* Understand and practice the timeless mantra for the ages,
Beer Before Liquor, Never Sicker
Liquor Before Beer, Never Fear

* How to wash the dishes and do the laundry
I was also going to say that Men at 21 should know how to truly listen to women, but now that I think about it, that's kind of a tall order for most guys. That one belongs in the 30+ category. :D

Order wine at a nice restaurant. (I don't know squat about wine since I don't enjoy drinking it.)
