Is this a regional thing, northeast? Is see it all the time here at the HTF, also, there's a guy on the local radio who grew up in Maryland who does this all the time.

This is a speech issue.

During normal speech (where we speak quickly) it sounds like we say then, but really mean than. If you are writing and ever get confused try comparing.

Incorrect: "Deep Impact is better then Armagedden."

Correct: "Deep Impact is better than Armagedden."

"then" is an adverb resembling "after that," "at that time," "in that case."

whereas:

"than" is refering to a comparison.
