I watched this one this afternoon. A lovely comedy-drama with lots of heart. Kino's Blu-ray disc offers a very good video transfer with only a couple of small, almost insignificant artifacts. Nice mono sound. Just some trailers for bonuses (wish there had been a commentary).

I seem to remember on the special about David Selznick in Hollywood that Janet Gaynor was interviewed and she spoke about getting the legendary Maud Adams to screen test for the old lady role in the movie, and they showed parts of her brilliant screen test. How I wish she had done the movie, but they couldn't persuade her to do it!

I;m so glad you like the transfer, Matt. I may pick this one up (I was all about ALLAH and kind of forgot about this one) because I've always really liked the movie.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Selznick also test the great Laurette Taylor for the part as well? I seem to remember there being a test of her somewhere for this movie though I don't think I've ever seen it. I know I've never seen the doc you;re talking about, though I'd love to.

The documentary was called Hollywood: The Selznick Years. You know, now that you mention it, it was Laurette Taylor's screen test they showed. They showed Maud Adams talking on camera but not playing the role. Laurette was brilliant, immensely moving.

You can find it on YouTube.

I saw Laurette Taylor in two movies directed by King Vidor. Unfortunately, the movies were silent so you couldn't hear her voice, but at least I saw her perform.
