I think it's included because it may have some underpinnings of the false alien abduction stuff in it.

There are obviously episodes where the mythology is more present than others but there are episodes not included in those lists that have huge mythology points in them. "Leonard Betts" is the best example. This episode would undoubtedly fall into the "Monster of the Week" category instead of the "mytharc" category but it was in "Leonard Betts" that Scully learned she had cancer. Other mytharc revelations were made in MOTW episodes. You can't fully seperate the two.

Another on the bubble episode is "Demons" from Season 4, I'm not even sure how to classify this one. It's starts of as MOTW, but drops the MOTW part when it turns into mytharc at the end, but like Bill is saying, it's not really mytharc like the rest of the episodes on Zen's list.

Thanks Bill,

In the case of Leonard Betts, I would add it to the Season 4 list. You bring up a very important exception with this episode. They can be separated, the list would be a bit more lengthy. Ommitting the obvious MOTW does help.

Would you include "Eve" from Season 1?
"Musings of Cigarette Smoking Man" from Season 4?

I'd include "Musings of Cigarette Smoking Man" and once you have that and "The Unnatural", I'd also put on "Travelers" from Season 5.

Hey, good discussion. I was slowly renting and watching the X-files - I forgot how much I enjoyed the show (stopped watching at about season 4?). I really enjoy the conspiracy episodes, some of the standalones are really good, but some of them fall under the "monster-of-the-week" ho-hum category.

I think "Paper Hearts" (4x11) should definitely be included, as well as "Jump the Shark" in addition to Mark's Season 9 episodes.

"Paper Hearts" is a non-sequitar in this case. While easily one of the best shows of that series, it didn't advance the mythology arc.

I agree with including "Jump The Shark". If you are going to include "Paper Hearts", then "Demons" should probably be included too, but I think I agree with Mike on this one.

May you must submit 2x04 "Sleepless"? There we can see the first appearances of Cryzeck and Mr. X... a couple very important to the myth of the series :D
