It looks like Wal Mart is having a huge sale on the series. Each season set is going for $19.99 while the mythos sets are going for $14.99 each.

Oh crap, I wonder if they have the First season Metal boxes with the 15.00 off coupon so we can go through that all over again.

Yeah, saw those today while I was picking up my copy of Phsych season 2.

Was considering picking up the entire series, but after getting burned by Fox tv shows on DVD in the past (Buffy season 2), I thought it best to do a little research. This is where the reviews on Amazon come in really handy.

1. The video quality on the first four seasons is so-so. (Grain, pixelation and other signs of over compression on the episodes) Considering that the orginal release was around $90 per season, the video quality should be nothing less then outstanding.

2. Slim sets are not complete. Fox decided to remove the 7th disc from each season, which for the most part means you are missing nearly all the bonus features.

3. Season two is missing the finale episode. The episode "Anasazi" was orginally on the 7th disc in the orginal release, and since Fox took away all the disc 7's from the slim sets, the episode is not included in the slim set. Reviewers as recent as June 2008 have said that the episode is still not present on the set, despite the fact Fox has known about this problem for TWO years. It's not just with Amazon's stock of the product, as people who have purchased it at retail have had the same problem.

I did a quick check, and the episode "Anasazi" is included in the first volume of the "Mythology" collection, so it's possible to obtain the missing episode in a rather round about way.

The episodes look about as good as a TV show from the mid-1990's finished on video are ever going to look on DVD. Not to mention that those first four seasons came out in 2000 and 2001 which is ancient history in DVD terms.

I realize that, and would have been willing to put up with so-so video quality considering the age of the series, and the time in which the DVD's were first released. I'm not however, willing to put up with missing content due to the greed of Fox.

How so, on Buffy 2?

Hilarious, the X-Files 2 slimsets missing the season finale... (I plan to get the series set someday).

How is that due to the greed of Fox? DVD sets are sold at bargain prices, margins are slim as a result of competition and I sure don't see greed evident by any of what has been going on with DVD. This was a mistake and Fox should mail out a supplemental DVD with the missing episode. If the cost associated with that is too expensive, it is just a business decision whether or not Fox chooses to do so, not greed. I would consider it a poor business decision but the major studios are not greedy when it comes to DVD sales, the product has fierce competition and low margins for sellers. What has happened to DVD prices is unprecedented in my experience.

Thanks for the heads up Kingfish.

And thanks for the info about the missing episode. A big WTF! should go here. That's really stupid in addition to being greedy. Chris, it's greedy because they got cheap and took away something that should have been included...and they did it quietly so it wouldnt hurt sales. Greedy bastards!

I'd love to buy them all but I'll wait for a new complete set of some sort to come out. They can sit on that shit. ;)

I have a question.

When you go to dvdpricesearch and search for X-Files the season sets are listed like this:
Season 2 - $24.99
Season 2 (Old) - $68.85

(Other seasons are similarly priced)

Does anyone know why the difference in price?

Initially, there were some of the S2 slimsets that didn't have the finale on it. It wasn't even widespread enough of a problem to have effected all of those slimsets that were first releasesd and it has since been corrected. I didn't even bother to mention that before because I didn't think people would actually believe thet Fox is still releasing it like there's no problem. Maybe Amazon and other stores still have the defective sets sitting in their warehouses but getting a defective set at this point is extremely unlikely (I don't care what random reviews on Amazon say).

Once again, the missing episode on S2 has been corrected and it's very unlikely that you will have a problem if you buy the S2 set.

Thanks Travis. Someone on rottentomatoes corrected me yesterday as well. :) Glad to hear it.

Now I have to decide if I want to buy a few seasons now or wait to pick up the full series set later since I don't want to spend to get the whole deal now. Decisions decisions!
