The makers of anime are slanting mostly for an audience of 13-26 year olds but the films/TV series are not solely aimed at that demographic
That's like saying all American animation is skewed at the same demographic, also, when it's not. In anime, you have adult anime (whether that is in terms of story, characters, etc. of if it's hentai) but Disney ONLY makes "family-oriented" films. Maybe all the anime you have seen is aimed at the 13-26 demographic, but that doesn't mean all anime is.

It depends on what you define as "adult". I have watched some of the so-called "adult" anime. Some people would consider it "adult". I consider a lot of that stuff to be juvenile in the extreme, regardless of what is depicted.

There is going to be anime aimed at adults, but as a percentage of the market it is going to be small compared to what is produced for the 13-26 demographic. And that is what I'm saying.......the MAIN demographic for MOST anime is the 13-26 market. I cannot figure out how you translate that into the word ALL? The observation that anime is generally aimed at the 13-26 group, comes from people who work in the Japanese animation industry.

Bakshi used to produce what could laughably be called "adult" animated films. However, his "adult" output was a very small part of the North American market for animation; therefore, regardless of his output, the main market for animated in films in N.A. remained the family. If you can prove to me that the 13-26 market is dwarfed by the adult segment of the anime market, then I will withdraw my statement. Until then I stand by it. Even if it is only going by my experience. I highly doubt that you have seen all the anime there is to see, either. Unless you have some secret source of adult anime, I would think what you have access to, would approximate what I have access to.
------------------------------------------------------------

Disney typically focuses on the same one or two all the time because anime is all Japanese animation and Disney is one specific company. You can't really compare the demographics of the two.[/unquote]

Yes.....I can......and I will.
I really don't care if there is 50 companies within a market or one. If 50 companies are producing the same type of product for the same market segment, then the overall result is no different than what one company is producing. The only difference is the brand name.

------------------------------------------------------------

Disney ONLY makes "family-oriented" films.
------------------------------------------------------------

That's right Disney ONLY makes "family-orientated" films. The reason for that, is the brand recognition that Disney has built up since their inception. People equate Disney with "family friendly" when it comes to entertainment. When they go to a Disney flick they are assured, just from the brand name alone, that the film is going to be appropriate for a family to watch.

It is no different for films made by Miyazaki. The native audience for his movies have built up an expectation that a certain type of entertainment is going to be provided. In general, all of Miyazaki's films are "family friendly" ,except possibly "Princess Mononoke". Even PM is not really inappropriate for a younger audience. Miyazaki has built up a reputation providing family orientated entertainment. Do you think that he is now going to suddenly start producing animated porn flicks with his name emblazoned on them? Not likely.

The same applies to Disney. Releasing "racier" animated films under the Disney trademark becomes problematic, because they have become straight-jacketed by the "Disney = wholesome entertainment" branding. If the "brains" at Disney want to go after a narrower demographic -like the 13-26 demographic- with "racier" (not necessarily more adult) animation, then they should be releasing it through one of their other distribution channels.

Anyway, the argument is getting stale. We will have to agree to disagree. I will watch animation from both sides of the Pacific and continue to see some good material from both American and Japanese animators. You can stick just to anime, if that is the only animation you think has any artistic value.

I find artistic value in American animation, including Disney, as well as anime, but I just find it to be a little annoying that anything Disney puts out is too childish and aimed at the same market without even putting a serious effort to branch out to anything (the only real efforts they have made were Treasure Planet and Atlantis, but even those were too family-oriented).
