I feel it's highly likely that Criterion will release this as a 4K UHD Stateside. So far, they have licensed 4K masters from StudioCanal for Breathless, The Trial, Mulholland Drive, The Others, Don't Look Now, La Haine and Le Cercle Rouge. The Third Man is one of their key films - it's been in the Criterion Collection on every format, since LaserDisc days. The long-out-of-print blu-ray from 2008 was the very first blu-ray they released (along with Chungking Express).
Exceptions interestingly enough are the Godard films Alphaville and Contempt which were great Criterion DVDs and have since migrated on blu and 4k to other labels.

I want this, I just don't want that big expensive import, which seems to be the only 4K version available worldwide.
It's available all over Europe: Germany, France, Italy and Spain all have the single disc version.

I'm a sucker for box sets but this particular item doesn't do much for me. For starters, there's an annoying jingle that plays while the lid is open and that would drive me crazy even if it's open for just a few seconds. Second, I have zero use for art cards and paper-based materials unless it's a decent-sized book. No screenplay reproductions - those are completely uninteresting to me.

I'll look at those other Euro editions to see if any are of interest, otherwise I'll just wait for the eventual Criterion release.

Exactly. Those are currently the best options for those not wanting the bix UK boxset (something I can understand).
Be aware however that UK, German and French discs are the same (Studio Canal), while the italian release is from Eagle and only has English with Italian subs, and the spanish one is from Divisa and is another different set of discs with English and Spanish (and spanish subs).

Considering the prices, the French release might thus be the best alternative to the UK boxset.

For what it is worth I ordered "The Third Man" box from Amazon UK on September 10th, and it is now on its way to me in New York City having been dispatched on November 4th.

Criterion?

I imagine Criterion will release it here in the States, but one never knows for sure, not to mention when. After all, Criterion allegedly has the license for The Three (and Four) Musketeers, and hasn't said boo about them, while StudioCanal released them on UHD a year and a half ago.

On the other hand, as I mentioned elsewhere, BFI has announced a two-fer of Yojimbo and Sanjuro, but it's scheduled for two months after Criterion's. On the other other hand, they've also announced a UHD of Del Toro's Cronos for February. That also seems like a natural for Criterion, but we haven't heard anything about it from them.

A Criterion re-release would be a no brainer. But then again, I would've said the same about another former Criterion title owned by StudioCanal: Contempt (Le Mépris), which was given a MOD release by Lionsgate last year.

We’ll find out soon enough.

If they somehow couldn't manage to get Contempt back from Canal, I'm not holding my breath.

I got my from Amazon Germany and it's spectacular looking. I don't know sound too much so it's not a sticking- point with me. I would say that it was curious that it did have a disclaimer I kept looking for a reason, which of course is what disclaimers make you do, but was not quite sure what they had in mind and why they felt the need to put it there.

The disclaimer must be on every new StudioCanal release - It's also before An Inspector Calls and The Conversation. "Historical attitudes that some might find offensive" on these films? It's just a blanket disclaimer, so that no-one can complain. I'm quite sure that this disclaimer will be commonplace on all classic films in the future. Surprised Warner Archive didn't put it in front of The Searchers!
