I have the current DVD of The Thing. It truly is a great, underrated film. The DVD is satisfactory but it needs a new, anamorphic transfer, soundtrack remaster and some extras (i.e. deleted scenes). Anyone know of any plans for a new release? HTF hasn't had a chat with Universal entertainment in a while.

I don't know of any plans on Universal's part. It's annoying as hell knowing this title isn't getting the treatment it deserves (a shiny new anamorphic transfer) but that Universal felt the need to give us Patch Adams and Notting Hill Ultimate Editions!

Bullseye! Couldn't have put it better myself, Adam!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that The Thing: Collector's Edition has been a big seller - it was one of the first truly great SEs on DVD.

Universal should do the right thing and release a new 2-disc SE with:

- A new restored and remastered anamorphic transfer

- Dolby 5.1

- DTS 5.1

- All the deleted scenes (in anamorphic 2.40:1)

- The complete, uncut 1981 behind-the-scenes documentary (seen only in clips on the retrospective documentary)

And all of the exisiting extras on the current DVD.

Go here for a great site: http://www.outpost31.com/index2.html :)

Please use a question mark in the thread title before people, like myself, get excited about something we only hope would happen. Thanks.

Heh. You had me all excited too.

I hate double dipping with DVD's usually but I'd be more than happy to do so for this film given a new transfer & any additional extras.. Hell I'd probably give in for just a new transfer.

Let's not forget about American Pie for the third time. (but, these are always to correlate with the sequels at the theaters).

I wrote in a thread several months back about the disappointing transfer of this movie. I'm sure one day it will be re-done.

I don't think the transfer is that bad on the DVD. It's an old film. I saw a print of the film at Juliard and it was not that great. I am thankful for the DVD even being there, but it definitely needs a remaster and anamorphic transfer.
