Doubt it'll be as good as the 1982 film, but at least it offers a new spin on the property.

    I'm interested!

I'm confused - how could they have completed effects for a movie that hasn't entered formal pre-production yet?

Unless I'm missing something, but the linked article implies the production is in its earliest stages. Doesn't even sound like there's a script yet!

    I liked the 2011 remake/sequel.

For the 2011 prequel/remake, they created excellent, practical make-up effects, but some idiot suit at the studio insisted that it be replaced with generic looking CG.

The Carpenter film was a massive flop that derailed his career, the 2011 version was another flop that made less than half its production costs back, so of course there's going to be yet another version. Isn't there a line about insanity being repeating the same thing and expecting different results?

Carpenters Thing Opened on the same day as another classic flop. Blade Runner.

Oh - okay. I never saw the 2011 version and know little about its production.

I guess WillG is still bitter! :D

well, regardless, it’s still wasn’t all that good of a movie. But good practical effects wouldn’t have hurt

If this is your typical Blumhouse flick, the reasonable budget will ensure some level of profitability.

Yeah, it screwed up his picture deal with Universal. However, some of my favorite Carpenter movies came in the next four years, Christine, Starman and Big Trouble in Little China. It's funny how The Thing and Big Trouble in Little China were box office failures, yet, they're recognized as good films today. Thank God for home video.:)

After their disappointing experience with The Thing (and a couple other films where their practical FX were replaced by CGI), Alex Graff and Tom Woodruff Jr, of Amalgamated Dynamics (the practical FX company) went on to make an all-practical FX horror film, Harbinger Down, if anyone is interested in seeing their all-practical FX on display in a film. I think it's available for streaming on Amazon Prime.

The budget for 2011's The Thing wasn't huge, reported at around $38 million (though it still didn't break even theatrically).

Which makes revisiting this yet again even more perplexing. Yes, they have some new source material to work with, but historically speaking this story hasn't been a cash cow.

They were the right films at the wrong time. Today, Joker made a billion dollars. If it had been released in '82, it would have flopped.

And I’m all for this. I’ve liked all three films and the 2011 version grows on me every time I watch it. Maybe I’m just one of those guys who thinks Mary Elizabeth Winstead should be a star. She gives this old man ideas when I watch the movie.

And maybe the new movie will bring the complete novel in an affordable published form.
