I was so hoping that Warner’s press release might clear the situation as to what elements were used, but it doesn’t look like it. Unless I hear more about it before release date, I might wait until reviews come in before I decide whether I’m buying this or not.

Warner Archive had a podcast, but no mention of next month's releases. Looks like that update will come in the next podcast which will be on October 30th or November 6th.

I noticed some October Warner Archive titles have been pushed back to November. I wonder if this delay issue will have any affect on these recent November releases such as this one.

Arctic researchers discover a huge, frozen spaceling inside a crash-landed UFO, then fight for their lives after the murderous being (a pre-Gunsmoke James Arness) emerges from icy captivity. Will other creatures soon follow? The famed final words of this film are both warning and answer: “Keep watching the skies!” A snappy ensemble. An eerie theremin-infused Dimitri Tiomkin score. Rising suspense. Crisp Christian Nyby direction. All merge in an edgy classic produced by Howard Hawks (Bringing Up Baby, Rio Bravo) and filled with Hawksian trademarks of rapid-fire dialogue and of people united by do-or-die stress. Keep watching the skies and the screen. Don’t miss a moment of “one of the best sci-fi thrillers of the ‘50s” (John Stanley, Creature Features).

I bought the UK DVD years ago to get the awesome John Carpenter Commentary which was not available on the US release. Would be great if Warner could license that.

I saw this in a theater in '82. I actually didn't like it much then, but it's grown on me. There is some amazing suspense in a few sequences, particularly the one involving the taking of blood samples. Technically it's awesome, and the acting is quite good. I liked the widescreen compositions. It has atmosphere. Going back to the original John Campbell concepts was good, but a bit overdone. I could have used a better score -- Ennio Morricone was channeling John Carpenter musically, which I think was beneath him. But, okay, I like the film, and the latest Shout! release is excellent.

But I still prefer the raw energy and script and acting of the original, which I think was even more atmospheric -- damn, you really feel pretty isolated in some Arctic wasteland in a claustrophobic scientific research station with no place to run once the shit hits the fan. I never tire of watching it. So happy about the upcoming Blu.

I don't recall the podcasts ever discussing any release that hasn't actually hit the streets. Probably next month.

Shows how reactions can be different. I found Carptenter’s version more claustrophobic.

There was a two disc DVD set that had the commentary. Unfortunately, you bought the single disc that didn't have it.

A Note on Our Upcoming Release of Howard Hawks’ Production of The Thing From Another World

Yes, this new master has been sourced from 35mm film elements. The restored "missing" sequences have been taken from later generation elements, so subtle and slight differences will be discernible. However, the restoration work has been under way for quite some in order to bring the release up to our customary high standards and we are quite pleased with the results. In addition, the opening titles have been corrected to the proper size and aspect ratio for the first time since its original release. Interested parties should look out for an upcoming Warner Archive Collection Podcast in which we will go into greater and more in depth details. As always, thanks for your support - and "keep watching the skies!"

Glenn Erickson has an interesting side-note concerning the history behind THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD.

There is a kickstarter project related to John W. Campbell's "Who Goes There?." A newly discovered manuscript shows that JWC's story was actually a pared down version of an unfinished novel.

This link gives a history of the find.

And this link goes to the kickstarter. The $1000 goal has already been met with $84,000 raised. Only $7.00 (+$4.00) will get you the ebook.
