I got my Simpsons R1 DVD set through on Monday. When I was watching last night it struck me how slow the opening credits seemed.
I stuck on one my VHS tapes (Bart Wars) and it was definitely back to the old zip I remembered.
I just wondered if it's down to PAL speedup or if they did in fact make the credits speedier on later seasons (I don't have any early eps on VHS to compare).
All I can say is it seems better speedier to me.

I thought it was because they are from the first year.
Is your tape the 1st season or later?
What struck me was how much the animation...and even personalities have evolved
Are they still being Broadcast on Sky over there?
Don't think you can blame it on PAL this time

Why?
Why do you keep hounding me and harassing me and hounding me?
It's not like I don't have anything better to do, you know.
It's not like the Phantom Cruiser is going to wax itself.
It's not like last night's burrito stain will just up and remove itself from my cape.

A very very busy superhero! Who does...things!
Now get out of here before I tell your mother.

Actually, I believe that the open credits were at their lengthiest in the first 1-2 seasons. There was Bart stealing the Bus Stop sign gag and Lisa's books in the rubber straps as she goes over a hump in the road on her bicycle gag. Both of them were excised for later seasons. Same with I think the guy in the back eating his sandwich with the tongs when the whistle blows at the plant. The sequence was tightened up after 1 or 2 seasons (maybe more?) and if you are used to syndication, you are lucky to get a full 15 seconds. This is how they were, and my VHS tapes reflect this as well.

I didn't mean the cuts to the credits, simply the speed with which they run. Homer fairly zips into the house ahead of Marge on my PAL VHS whereas he ambles on the NTSC DVD. As I said, I have no early eps on VHS to compare. Guess no one can say for sure.
I think one of the causes of my noticing is the menu music which is running much faster.
Cheers.
