Can someone give me the running time on the R1 DVD.
I just got the R2 version which runs at 117 minutes, but I am sure that I read that it was over 130 minutes

My R1 copy, according to the box, clocks in at 144mins.

Anyone know why the UK version is so much shorter.

Well, I don't think the PAL 4% speedup is the culprit here [IMG] More likely a printing mistake on the cover. Have you actually timed the film?

I'm only used to the 144 cut, I've no idea why Europe got a shorther (119 min I believe) version when it came out theatrically, and indeed, hit home video and TV. It's not a prining error, Rob.
What's more, I am shocked Warner cheaped out and made the version on release in the R2 Kubrick set the shorter cut. Get the R1 asap.

Hang on, you're actually saying this is the REAL running time?

Yes. The European cut of The Shining was only 119 minutes, whilst the Americans (to my knowledge) always got the 144 minute release.

    Just checked the disc
    114 minutes to be precise
I am sick to death of Warner [IMG]
What a complete waste of money. What on earth are they thinking ??
Can someone confirm that the 144 min R1 is the remastered. If someone has the R2 version, it would be useful to know what is missing, though I'll definitely be changing it anyway

Simon, as I said, to my knowledge the Americans have only ever had the 144 min cut. Both R1 DVD releases are this length.

What on earth are they thinking ??[/quote]In sum, the shortened 118-min. cut was Kubrick's attempt to salvage at least a pyrrhic victory with a more commercially-viable run-time, after a particularly inhospitable roasting courtesy of the British critical brass at the time of the film's inital release. Alas, though the truncated cut remains to this day the "accepted" version in Europe, its commercial fate mirrored its critical one.

I bought the German R2 release not remembering that it would be the shorter version. Also the R4 version is the short one.
I have ordered the R1 since I want the longer cut.
