What is the deal with the aspect ratios of The Shield?

Both Region 1 Seasons 1 & 2 are 4:3. However, Region 2 Season 1 was 16:9 and on cable here in Finland season 1 was 4:3 and season 2 was 16:9.

I am confused. Are we talking about vertical cropping here?

I dont think there has been any definitive answer on the AR of The Shield. I certainly havent seen one. I have compared the 4:3 and 16:9 version and whilst you do get more picture information on the 16:9 version the composition of shots appears fine to me in both versions. Personally I think they probably shot with both ARs in mind.

Several internet sources seem to suggest that the show has originally been filmed with 1.77:1 AR in mind, which has then been modified to 4:3 for FX network airings.

Fox seems to have decided to use 4:3 for R1 Seasons 1 & 2 whereas R2/4 season 1 (season 2 due july) released by Columbia Tristar gets the anamorphic 1.77:1 treatment.

Think I'm gonna sell my R1 box sets and replace them with R2 cos I prefer the 16:9 framing.
