I mean a sentence spoken by a character which is just as frightening as any visual or sound effect.

My vote is for the line from THE HAUNTING:
"Oh, God...whose hand was I holding...?"

    Happy Halloween!

    Usual Suspects:

Keaton once said, "I don't believe in God, but I'm afraid of him." Well I believe in God, and the only thing that scares me is Keyser Soze.

I'd have to go with, "the spider just caught two more flies," in Pulp Fiction. Probably not the exact line, but it was something to that effect when Butch and Marcellus stumble into the shop.

I'm going to mildly wander off topic, but it is semi-movie related:

the book sphere--I read it all in one night, in one shot, non-stop one summer night. Pretty decent book. And there's a part in the book, where the computer readout is translating for the Sphere, and they're talking to it, and suddenly, out of nowhere, after a long conversation where they're learning about it, trying to placate it and be nice to it, there's a couple line breaks, and dead center in the middle of the page

    I WILL KILL YOU ALL

Jesus that chilled me. Didn't see it coming when I flipped the page and it just tripped me out.

Of course by the time that line showed up in the movie translation, I was already asleep, so it didn't have quite the same effect.

My girl really likes "You helped her? Why did you help her? you're not supposed to help her, Rachel" from "The Ring" but that didn't do much for me.

I think "The horror...the horror.." scared me, not because I thought anything bad was going to happen, but because it was so goddamn creepy, I didn't know people could be that crazy.

Also, the last few lines of Leland Orser's confession to the "lust" crime in "Seven" always paralyzed me.

of course, there's the crowd favorite "They're here.." but that got played out by it's place in pop culture as the years went by. But at the time? Damn.

"You're a good man, Agent Hull", from "Frailty". Chilled me to the bone.

"I would gladly murder the world, just to have you love me" or something like that. Commadus, from "Gladiator".

Sends a chill down my spine, even after +20 viewings.

    "Shopping."

From Arlington Road. It's the most memorable thing in the film.

"I killed them. I killed them all. They're dead, every single one of them. And not just the men, but the women and the children, too! They're like animals, and I slaughtered them like animals! I HATE THEM!" Anakin Skywalker, Attack of the Clones

Anakin saying this made my stomach drop, which I don't know why. It probably has to do with the fact that it's the beginning of his descent.

"I met him, fifteen years ago. I was told there was nothing left. No reason, no conscience, no understanding; even the most rudimentary sense of life or death, good or evil, right or wrong. I met this six-year-old child, with this blind, pale, emotionless face and, the blackest eyes... the DEVIL'S eyes! I spent eight years trying to reach him, and then another seven trying to keep him locked up for I realized what was living behind that boy's eyes was purely and simply... EVIL!" Dr Loomis, Halloween

This quote shows how Michael Myers has been since childhood, and explains his whole existance; emptiness and evil. Makes me wonder what could make him this way.

    Too graphic?

There is some line in "Sleepers" about prison guards sodomizing young boys with either plungers or night sticks.

This just messed me up, more disturbing than scary, but whatever:

Willard: Who's the commanding officer here?

    Soldier: Ain't you?
