I forget where I heard about this set, or if that's even the correct name.

Can anyone tell me the right name of the set, and the DVD's included?

PS I'd love to hear which Samurai movies and books you consider "definative". I like all things samurai, but haven't seen many movies or books on the subject.

I've seen "Seven Samurai", "Shogun", and a series, I forget the name, with Mifune. He's on a mission to become a true "samurai", a mission given to him by a monk, he's got a girl waiting for him, but he's not interested, he ends up killing a famous samurai at the end of the third with a boat oar, or something. I liked that one alot..

Looking forward to "The Last Samuarai" with Tom Cruise. That should be awesome!

As for books, pretty much just the Clavell Series.

Anyhoo, any input would be appreciated!

The Mifune you describe is the Samurai Trilogy.

    Other definatives are

    Yojimbo and Sanjuro (also Mifune)

    Hidden Fortress (also Mifune)

    Zatoichi series (Blind Samurai)

    Babycart series

There are also a few other Kurosawa flicks, some with Mifune, others without.

There are a few others as well.

Kurosawa's Throne of Blood is my personal favorite samurai movie (although Seven Samura is holy writ AFAIC)...

Also check out The 47 Ronin, Lone Wolf and Cub (coming to DVD in April, finally!), and the 27 Zatoichi films (with over 100 TV episodes).

And you must read the Lone Wolf and Cub manga by Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima. Currently published in 28 volumes (over 3000 pages!) by Dark Horse Publishing. A definitive study into the nature of bushido. Not only a great manga series, but quite possibly the greatest series of graphic literature ever produced... except for maybe las Cuevas de Altamira.

Not to mention Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo. Sheer joy and perfection.

CHUSHINGURA (The Loyal 47 Retainers/Ronin) is a must-see samurai epic, and it's available on DVD too. Not on DVD, but still worthy classics, are HARA-KIRI, SAMURAI ASSASSIN, [SAMURAI] REBELLION and SWORD OF DOOM, just for starters! [IMG]

Thanks, guys. That should get me started!

And, yes, Steve, that was the collection I was referring to, Thanks!

Has anybody sampled the Criterion DVD's?

For me it's all about the Lone Wolf and Cub series.

And I'm glad to hear they'll be out on DVD here in the US in April! Thanks for the word, Matt. The one particular episode that I really want to get is Baby Cart in Peril, which featured a female assassin with a large tattoo on her back. When she faced her arch enemy at the end, she did something to defeat him that was really ingenious and sexy.[IMG]

The LW&C series originally started as movies which were then condensed into a single movie called Shogun Assassin and finally they were turned into a manga series. I'm not aware of an animated version.

You can get more info on it here:

I would like to also recommend

Heaven and Earth very epic and beautifully filmed.

I have the criterion of Sword of Doom, very hardcore.

The overlooked classic Hari-kiri metioned before is also a favorite.

dont forget Roshomon with mifune. and RAN,

theres a new 47 ronin from 2000. Also there is the Animego sets for Sleepy Eyes of Death series, red lion, and then the sex sadist filled cop samurai crazy series where he ties girls up and lowers them onto himself unto they give in and give up the info.

2002 released on video is Tabu, its a story about homosexuality, but as for samurai swordplay its top notch.

Oops! My mistake, Matt. I didn't know LW&C first started as manga and was then made into the movies. [IMG]

I have to agree with the LW&C series, it is absolutely fantastic. I really like Zaitoichi as well. I even got my wife hooked on Zaitoichi movies. I was watching one on the IFC channel a couple of weeks ago and she walks into the room thinking, "Oh great, another samurai movie. Don't you have anything better to do?" Well, for some reason she sat down and started to watch and has been hooked ever since.[IMG]

Check out http://www.animeigo.com/home.t for info and release dates for these and a few other samurai movies.
