Just got done reading Ebert's article on this film in his "Great Movies" column and I think that term aptly applies to this film. It's been 20 years since it was released and I still consider it one of the finest dramas ever put on the screen. Any chance Warner might release the film as a special edition at some point in the near future? Perhaps Criterion could take a shot.

I think that possibility has been mentioned. Certainly it's in need of a re-do.

It's happening, later this year is the current plan from what I hear. Criterion won't be doing Warner titles for a lonnnng time to come

    Excellent news. [IMG] [IMG]

The Right Stuff is easily one of the best films of the 1980s in my opinion.

I sure hope they strike a new print (or at the very least clean up the old one). There were so many instances of print damage/dirt/etc on the old DVD, yikes!

Come on Warner, treat this beauty of film right! [IMG]

so what kind of special features will be on the disc. A commentary with all the actors would be great.

Anyone else excited about this? I never though we'd see the day this would happen.

Please please please Warner, fix the audio. It was hideous in the first release. Even the VHS Hi-fi version sounded better.

    thanks

Dame that was a fast combine. Doing a search for the Right Stuff gave nothing in results.

I'm really psyched about this. Loved the movie and has anyone read the book? Great book, it has SO much more information than the film does.

Did anyone ever read the book by William Goldman (can't remember which one) in which he talks about briefly being hired to write the screenplay? Makes you wonder what would have happened...

The Goldman book is Adventures in the Screen Trade. Great book and I do remember the chapter in which he talks about his involvement in The Right Stuff. Judging by the finished film, I'm convinced that Philip Kaufman did nothing wrong in going in another direction.

Now, bring on that special edition. I'm so glad I've held off on the original release, because I've have seen it quite cheap.

Oh, I agree that Kaufman did the right thing. I just think it's interesting that William Goldman (not exactly a slouch in the screenwriting/book adaptation department) was having trouble; I've always thought we were lucky to get the amazing version that we did.
