Did anyone watch the premiere of "The Resident"? My wife TiVo'd it, drawn by the cast: Emily VanCamp (Revenge), Matt Czuchry (The Good Wife), Melina Kanakaredes (CSI:NY, Providence), and Bruce Greenwood (Star Trek, Mad Men).

It's a gritty, cynical and hopeful hospital drama. I haven't watched a medical show since the quickly canceled Red Band Society, and before that Season 4 of Grey's Anatomy. The Resident has some promise, but I'm not really a big guts-and-gore hospital-show enthusiast. And the dramatic tensions are a bit overwrought, even for my sensibilities, at the start.

In all, it could be a good show, but it's not really for me. Still, I'm curious if anyone else is watching?

I didn't watch the pilot. I DVRed the second episode that aired in its regular slot last night and began watching it tonight. When strings were pulled so The Resident's friend lost the heart that should have been his to some political big shot, I turned it off. Too soap opera-ish and predictable for me.

Haven't really seen a very authentic hospital based show, in a very long time. St. Elsewhere was, at times, fairly authentic. Same goes for Ben Casey and Dr. Kildare. Even M*A*S*H, when they stuck to the medical aspect of the show was pretty accurate. Quite frankly, the previews for The Resident, really turned me off, the overwrought resident out to save the world, damn the torpedoes and the administration, just doesn't ring true to me. I suppose the TV writers have to inject some tension and drama to keep viewers from getting bored.

I want to check it out due to the cast, but haven't had the time yet.

I really like it, well worth the time. Bailed on 911, but this one is pretty good.

Have we ever? Most TV medical shows show doctors spending time with one or two patients an episode. They fight the powers that be to get the best treatment for the patients. Multitudes of doctors spend many hours consulting on one patient. Has any TV doctor show got it right?

That being said, I like the show, not as good as The Good Doctor, but I like it.

They're all fictional, obviously. Doubt they're very accurate but provide good drama. Watching old episodes of "Grey's Anatomy" after the plane crash. Way over the top but fun.

Dumped "The Good Doctor", I just found that kid to annoying, but we all have different opinions.

I do like "Chicago Med", somewhat realistic.

I suspect that we’re in agreement that if they produced an accurate medical drama it would be boring as hell and there’d be no drama. I just take the shows with liberal grains of salt. Yeah, YMMV with things that I like. The Good Doctor character makes the show, for me.

I hope they get rid of the Bruce Greenwood character. Totally unlikable, taking credit for other people's work. He's disgusting, but I guess all these shows have to have a shady character that we can hate.

As in "Negan" on "The Walking Dead".

Well, I’ve gotten hooked. I like Matt Czuchry and Emily VanCamp, along with the rest of the cast.

My impression is that the medical stuff is pretty good for TV...but the constant interactions with the Chief of Surgery and peon Resident and Nurse is ridiculous.

But it’s juicy, moral-outrage, engaging ridiculousness. So I’m hooked.

My impression is that the best medical show of recent TV is “Scrubs”.

No joke. I’ve seen it mentioned by doctors and nurses as the show that gets it right about the relationships and pressures and even some of the medicine.

.
I don’t remember the details of the show to remember whether I thought it was accurate, but was funny.

In a manner of speaking they did. In the first episode his incompetence killed a patient and he forced his staff to cover it up. Over the seasons he has transitioned to a doctor of great humanity. I nominate him for comeback character of the decade.

I have found the show to be consistently entertaining and involving. Interesting stories and it’s so well cast. I like all the actors. This brings me to this question:
Why did they kill off Nic? Did the actress want out? I know she’s got Marvel work, but it didn’t appear so heavy that she couldn’t continue with the show? I do like how she exited. It was done with dramatic weight and respect. Unlike “The Rookie” where they recently threw a featured character in the waste bin.

Emily VanCamp wanted out.
