scott benson did a documentary in 1997 titles the Race to Save 100 Years. I believe it aired on TCM or TNT around that time. I was wondering if it was ever made available on dvd. I have searched high and low and can find nothing on the documentary except a NTtimes article and the IMDB page.

the documentary showed the wears of time on silent films, and was promoting film preservation. I have sent e-mails and done some research, but have talked to few who saw it, much less have a copy of it.

Thanks for any help that can be provided.

This seems like a good thing to put as an extra on another WB release.

Also, everyone needs to see Keepers of the Frame. It's on VHS... it's a great documentary on preservation/restoration that is shot and edited beautifully.

Yeah, Keepers of the Frame is great. It's the doc that made me want to go into archival work. Unfortunately, no dice so far.

But I digress - KotF would be a welcome addition to my DVD library, and it seems that The race to Save 100 Years would be another one I'd greatly enjoy.

You know what KotF recalls in my mind? The days before AMC was the suckiest suck that ever sucked. [IMG]

This reminds me of the good ol' days (circa 1995) when AMC really stood for American Movie Classics and TCM was merely an upstart. Back then AMC had its annual Film Preservation Festival, showing off recently restored features and shorts commerical-free (I think that was when I saw Becky Sharp for the first time, newly restored by UCLA) with featurettes on the ongoing fight to save older films.

I only wish that TCM would start its own festival to the art of preservation. On the other hand, one can argue that the channel is showing newly preserved stuff every month. Regardless, I'd love to see The Race To Save 100 Years on DVD as part of a TCM film history boxed set of original productions like MGM- When The Lion Roars and those fabulous Private Screenings interviews hosted by Robert Osborne.

I would like to see a much shorter feature added to a DVD
as bonus content; namely, the feature also aired by TCM,
lasting no more than 9 or 10 minutes, titled '100 Years
at the Movies' (produced and directed by Chuck Workman).

I was introduced to film preservation and classic films by AMC years ago when it was a great channel. I used to love watching the newly restored films each year. Both of those documentaries sound extremely interesting to me, and I wish they were available on DVD.

Maybe the studios should be forced to give $1.00 of every $15.00 spent by consumers on DVD product to a film preservation organization, and that way we can make a difference.

Thanks for all the replies...I wish there were more documentaries out on film preservation. Any other suggestions?

'100 Yearsat the Movies'by Chuck Workman? When was the last time this aired? I would love to take a look at it.

I'd have a hard time saying exactly when Chuck Workman's
film last aired. As I mentioned, the film runs only
9 or 10 minutes, so TCM uses the film as 'filler'
programming in between movies. As a result,
Workman's film is never specifically listed
on on-screen programming guides and the
    like.
