Just watched the The Phantom Laserdisc. Anyone in this forum
own the LD or DVD. I found that the picture transfer for the
LD is really solid. No visible edge enhancement, sharp & the
colours are solid. The DD5.1 audio track is good, with the
LFE bass giving much punch where it's due. The surrounds
are quite spatial.
Did not buy the DVD when it was release. It was just a
revision of my LD library. Appreciate some feedback or
comments on the LD or comparison between DVD.
Thanks in advance :)

Dan,

I think he`s talking about the movie The Phantom with Billy Zane not The Phantom Menace...

I too own the Phantom on laserdisc and I really like the transfer and sound quality. I think Paramount put out a lot of really nicely done laserdiscs, there just lacking in the extras department. I wish they would have included the teaser trailer for the movie, I thought that was a pretty cool trailer.

The DVD of THE PHANTOM is a noticable improvement on the laserdisc thanks to the anamorphic enhancement, but the laserdisc was really one of the best ever produced so many may feel no need to upgrade, especially if their television doesn't accodomate 16:9 enhancement.

Now i am confused...maybe LEON can be more specific...

There were two films released in laserdisc under the name PHANTOM.

One is the PARAMOUNT film-THE PHANTOM stars BILLY ZANE,

another the DIMENSION film-THE PHANTOM stars BEN AFFLEK.

Sorry for the confusion guys. Its Paramount's The Phantom

with Billy Zane. Agree with Larry, the LD is too good to

upgrade to the DVD.Anyway the DVD do not have much extras.

The first few batch of PARAMOUNT releases are quite lack of extras and other features...such as subtitles(the releases are close captioned which require external processing) and anamorphic treatment.

THE SAINT,HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER,PATRIOT GAMES,CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER,DEEP IMPACT are just some of the titles that i can think of.

The Saint R1 does have an anamorphic widescreen transfer, Spanish subtitles, trailer, and audio commentary by director Philip Noyce(which was from the laserdisc). It sells for about $15.00 in most stores.
