Being that this 2-disc set is movie only, with the feature spread across the 2 discs, I was wondering if the dts track will be full bitrate on this release. For the length of the movie, 2 discs would be more than enough for high bitrate video and a full bitrate dts track ala Dance With Wolves dts version... I sure hope so...

I thought the extras were going to be on one disc, with the movie on another.

That is the case with Hollow Man & Starship Troopers, but not with The Patriot. To allow for a high video bitrate and a dts track on such a long movie, they are splitting the film over 2 discs. If the film was put only on the first disc with a dts track then the video quality would probably be worse than the current release.

    I still don't buy it.

It has been a long time since Dvdreview has posted accurate, original news. Until this news is posted elsewhere I would recommend taking it with a grain of salt. Maybe that's just me...

Regardless of whether it ends up having extras or not, the film will still have to be spread over 2 discs. I just hope they use the extra space for a full bitrate dts track, as I couldn't care less about extras, which if I really wanted them, would've bought the standard edition already.

I don't see why they can't put the movie on one disc.

The Thin Red Line is 3 hours, has Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital 2.0, subtitles and many consider it to be a reference disc.

It will have to be 2 discs if they use the maximum video bitrate (which is the whole point of Superbit). I'm not sure what video bitrate Thin Red Line uses (I don't have this disc to check), but I couldn't see it being as high as a Superbit transfer.

Are any of these titles going to sport the new DTS 96/24 format?

I actually own one of the first DTS produced DVD-As with a 96/24 track (Fabulous T-Birds) and can't figure for the life of me how to access it. I assume that we'll all need new receivers and DVD players to play them back?

I use my PC for DVD playback, I imagine it would be easy for them to add support for it, although every software I've tried only decodes it at 48k.

That artwork made me remember CTHV's first stab at the cover art for the original Patriot release. Remember that arwork? It looked like Mel Gibson was bent over a toilet "dropping a deuce". They would up changing it the current artwork, which is only slightly better.

    Regards,

Are the extras on the Superbit going to be the same ones from the original disc?

I hear ya, Greg. I just watched the current version a few weeks ago and the transfer is very good and solid, as well as the soundtrack. This is one title that is going to be hard to improve upon. However, I do have a 61" TV and (minor) improvements are noticable. I'll be curious to see the reviews on this one.

And I'll, in turn, be very interested in your comparison review if you do pick up a copy.
