I read yesterday on Amazon that the many bootleg DVDs of The Outlaw have different running times because they were derived from film prints that had been censored in various parts of the country.

Apparently by far the best DVD came from Legend in a two disc package. The Legend disc claims to come from a restored element, and one Amazon customer says this version is uncut and the picture quality is good. The Legend disc is OOP and scalpers are demanding a king's ransom. Roan also released a DVD and this too purports to have come from a restored element.

Does anyone know if the Roan disc provides a good presentation of a complete version of The Outlaw?

Many thanks in advance.

I don't have the Legend release, but the Roan is 117 minutes long. The quality is mediocre at best.

I have the "Best of the West" (The Outlaw/Santa Fe Trail) from Triton(2001) and they say it contains "EROTIC SCENES BANNED IN 1941" and runs 116 min. Picture is okay.

I have the one that looks like the picture below (I'm at work so I can't read whether it is Roan). It looks pretty good as I recall. It has a good commentary with Jane Russell on camera back in about 2008 watching the film.

Looks like from reading on Amazon that I have the Legend disk. There's one Amazon seller offering it for $39.99 right now.

I've had several different DVDs of this flawed but entertaining film, including the Roan and Legend, and the latter is the only one worthy of serious consideration. Copies are often offered for sale cheaply on Amazon; you just have to keep checking. Right now it's $20-odd on the US site, while Amazon UK has several for £15. Of course, it can be had for much less too.

It's yet another title awaiting rescue from PD DVD hell with a decent BD issue. Too bad Legend didn't release their version in HD too, as per their excellent She (1935) BD and various others.
