I heard this song recently at a party and had a bet going with a friend as to who the original singer or band that performed this song is. I tried a search at Cdnow, but got way too many results.

    So anyone know?

Norman Greenbaum. I imagine he was the first, since he wrote it.

So if I do a search for Norman Greenbaum on Morpheus or Audiogalaxy, I'll get some results? When was this song originally released anyways?

It was released in the great year of 1969. There are at least two greatest hits packages of Greenbaum's material.
Here is one for less than $10.00. I do alot of my music shopping at this site - great prices, quick delivery. I hope this helps.

the song in question by Norman Greenbaum (also heard on the film Apollo 13) may have been released in 1969, it was not a chart topper until 1970. It is also the only hit song he ever had (can you think of another?).

In fact, Joel Whitburn's book does not list it as entering the top 40 chart until Mar of 1970.
