Hey Osato, that's great you enjoyed the vinyl of the TMP soundtrack from La La Land. Mine is still wrapped in plastic. I'll wait till I get a turntable and set up before playing it.

I'm really curious, I had read a review posted in an earlier post. That person mentioned how the blaster beam for V'ger sounded super deep. So I curious if that is an element of the vinyl's ability to maybe go further then the CD versions could in terms of either dynamic range, if I understand that, or is vinyl just more capable of getting to the lower end. I'm still looking around for a turn table that makes sense for me, so I'll find out. But I'm really curious why that reviewer had such a surprising reaction to the vinyl. :)

Vinyl typically has less bass to it though, to help with tracking and keeping needles from popping out of their grooves.

Oh, it's September 8th. Of course, a big day in Star Trek history.

I'm not an audiophile, but the lp version is amazing. I believe it sounds richer than the cd release.

Did you see my post about the lp player?

I will get the mondo khan one from the mrs. For Christmas.

Not for what you get in return for that $200. It's a steal!

The TOS box is super good. Only heightens my sadness over the fact that The Twilight Zone will probably never get a similar treatment.

Joel, I had read an interview with an audio engineer about how recordings were mastered for vinyl and he did say they have to limit the bass frequencies because as you said, the needle will jump off the groove if bass is too high! It's interesting how the digital realm has made the audio engineers of today remaster from the original tapes for older analog recordings meant for vinyl to take advantage of what CD and audio file capabilities.

A friend did make a comment from what he reads that Star Trek The Motion Picture La La Land original CD release should have been mastered from the tapes and not in the digital realm, but then he may not understand the power or work flow of modern audio software. I certainly don't. It is interesting that houses like La La Land and Intrada and Cresendo and the others that this is probably the only way they can get the information where they can then do their work. Though it was great that La La Land was able to actually get the tapes for Star Trek TOS. But that too was mastered in the digital realm.

That's interesting Osato that to your ears, Star Trek The Motion Picture on the new analog vinyl sounds richer. I wonder if the vinyl allows for more midrange and you're also hearing more beyond the CD limits, and closer to 24-bit/192kHz resolution. I did see your earlier message about the turntable. I just need to find time to look into getting one. :)

Osato, the Star Trek TOS set is a great set and one I treasure. But it is a limited release and I can only imagine the prices would increase when they are no longer available and eBay and other venues will be more costly.

Not to pile on the lovefest for the TOS set...but there are 15 discs of content, each with at least an hour of music on them. Break that down into a per disc price and it's a great deal.

And from a content perspective, I love just randomly choosing a disc or track and letting it go. The music brings me right back to the show...I can see the Enterprise flying by or a captain's log entry or the Kirk and Spock fight in Amok Time just with the music. It was well worth the money for me.

^ HAHA! It was totally worth it for me when the set went on sale. That's how you have to get it. Heck, that's how I buy most of the things in my life. :)

If anyone is missing the Nemesis Deluxe Edition CD, it's included in a 20% off Varese Sarabande sale with code Varese2017 at Screen Archives per an e-mail I got this morning.

Thanks Jason. Is that version a hybrid CD with SACD being a layer? I thought I saw that some years ago and missed getting it.

I definitely think it's a great Goldsmith score! I recently, within the last two months, purchased this soundtrack. I haven't listened to it yet and I'll check it when I get home to see if it's the same copy as the two disc listed above. I'm pretty sure it is, but it's possible it's not.

    Great score!

    Movie? Divides fans for sure...
I like the score better than the film.

What do you all think of the main title/end titles for DISCOVERY?

I think visually the opening title sequence was quite nice. Musically, I'd give it a C+. I realize it may grow on me as the season progresses, but Fred Steiner remains the greatest of all Trek composers, IMHO, followed by Goldsmith.

I haven't seen the version with the credits, but I was 100% unimpressed with the visuals. I like the music okay; I've cooled to it since I first heard it. The visuals feel bland and uninspired to me, like something right out of a Bond movie.

I thought it was fine. Aside from the original series theme at the end I don't recall the music during the sequence at all.

I thought the first episode was really good overall to. I was surprised actually.
I won't see the rest of the series on cbs access though.
