I've gone for (almost) constant area, no matter what ratio so I watch EVERYTHING in OAR.

Here are the approximate screen sizes I use:-

2.35:1 - 98" x 42" (4116 square inch)
1.78:1 - 86" x 48" (4128 square inch)
1.33:1 - 74" x 56" (4144 square inch)

I think this is one of those situations where you are right either way. He obviously approved the widescreen viewings of the original theatrical release. But then he apparently also felt the current dvd aspect ratios were preferred for viewing at home. He approved both presentations, and that should be enough to satisfy everyone in either camp.

We need a new acronym for a situation like this. Instead of OAR, how about DPAR - Director's Preferred Aspect Ratio? ;)

Yep- INHD shows Orange and Jacket that way (look pretty good), but then they show most everything that way- OAR be damned!

Pretty sad when INHD shows 4:3 material @ 1.78. They show alot of made for TV movies this way.

Until Turner Classic Movies has an HD version, I'd hardly use HDTV as a good example of what proper presentation is. Yes, some Kubricks are shown at 1.78:1... but they also crop most 2.35:1 films to 1.78:1 too.
