    Hey guys,
Just perusing the latest Crutchfield and came across this unit. Looks pretty cool, but I don't remember any mention of it here. Is this the proverbial nail in my VCRs coffin? or just another gadget? How about coupling it with a PVR? [IMG]
Does anyone have any experience with this unit? This may be my next upgrade.
    Thanks in advance.

If the unit is $1,000 at Crutchfield, you should be able to find it for much less somewhere else. Crutchfield usually charges MSRP for their items.
Personally, I'm waiting on DVD-R technology. Prices are dropping rapidly, and there are still too many formats to figure out which will prevail. In another year, $500 recorders will probably be the norm.

Eric, I believe the DMR-E20 only came out recently, so I don't know that anyone here has it yet. I haven't read any discussions of it here yet. I've seen it at Tweeter a few times in the past two weeks. They only got in a couple weeks ago. It's a weird-looking player to me. Furthermore, for $1000, I don't feel the disc drawer is well-constructed. Just my $0.02 on what I have seen from the Panasonic unit. It could be a very good recorder, however.
As for it being the final nail in the coffin for your VCR, I don't think so. First of all, it's $1000. Second of all, it's still an early-generation DVD recorder. There may be some bugs that still need to be worked out. Furthermore, like CD recorders and DVD players, the price of DVD recorders and blank media should come down in time as more companies release them. Hopefully the technology will improve in the process. Finally, I still don't believe there is an accepted DVD recording standard. A few companies have developed their own proprietary recording formats, and we may see companies release harware with competing formats and no cross-compatibility. Now, I admit that I don't keep up with developments on the DVD recording front, but for all of these reasons, I would wait awhile before getting one of these machines.

Scott, our posts crossed in the cyberworld. Even though we don't agree on college football teams ( [IMG]), I agree with you on DVD recorders. [IMG]

I am interested in this player.
The DVD-Ram discs are the same type used in my DVD-Ram Camcorder.
With this machine I would be able to playback the DVD-Ram discs with leaving them in their case.
Panasonic seems to be all over DVD-Ram with their recent product releases.
The DMR-E20 ,RP-91 as well as their DVD-rom drives are all DVD-Ram capable.
Just think,,With the DMR-E20 ,,you would be able to record the Dolby Digital Pay per veiw movies in 5.1 surround onto DVD format.. [IMG]

I am calling KK today to see what price they will give me on it or if it is even available in Canada. Unfortunately Crutchfeild does not ship to Canada. They won't even send me a Catalogue to look at. @#*@#$*
I did pick up the RP-91 for DVD-Ram playback, but it doesn't record.
The DMR-E20 would be awesome to own..I just love the idea of using DVD instead of tape. You can create chapters and skip to where ever you want on the disc.

How about the Pioneer Elite DVR-7000 it is a third generation player and looks like it could replace the majority of DVD players in peoples systems. (it is not cheap either)

    Brajesh,,
You are absolutely correct. The DMR-E20 does only record in Dolby Digital 2.0
Sorry,,I got ahead of myself on that one.
I sure hope 5.1 recording can be a reality in the near future off of another 5.1 source.

I think I may look into the Pioneer model.
Sure looks like a nice machine although not sure if it has the time slip feature.

I guess it makes sense that DVD recorders only record in stereo because the manufacturers are thinking that most people will be taping standard TV programs (time shift recording) as opposed to Dolby Digital 5.1 movies off of digital satellite TV. That said, I would hold off on buying a recorder to see if multi-channel recording becomes a reality.
The situation with current DVD recorders reminds me somewhat of the fact that initial SACD players could play in stereo and not multi-channel. I say somewhat because stereo has been the standard with music and is preferred by most audiophiles, but surround sound is the standard with DVDs. Still, some people have held out for multi-channel SACD players, and I think it would be wise to hold out for multi-channel DVD recorders.

    Point taken,
Thanks for your help guys. I think maybe I'll hold off a while on a DVD recorder.
As for my next purchase, I'm still juggling between a PVR, a PS2, or a Behringer Feedback Destroyer (since I got my first SVS 20-39 last week). [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
    Thanks again,
    Eric

Just incase anyone is intrested, I recently placed an order for one of these - but unfortunatly I am being forced to sell it before it even arrived. My car decided to spring a nice oil leak which will require the removal of my transmission (rear seal).
This happened yesterday, and the DVD Recorder arrived today. So, if anyone is intrested I would be willing to sell it for $875 shipped. It is 100% brand new and hasn't even been removed from the shipping box.
    Thanks,
    Lane
