When this film was first released in theaters in 1979, which opening and closing logos were used? Did they differ depending on whether people saw it in British or American theaters?

The earliest print I have seen, the 1980 Magnetic Video release, began with the Associated Film Distribution logo (AFD for short).

American was AFD, which was the American film distribution arm for ITC. When AFD went under in 1982, distribution (for the most part) went to Universal. I believe ITC had its own distribution arm in the UK. I don't believe there was a closing logo, but I'm going on 35 year old memories here.
